Thank you for another great semester! 05/05/04 - 11:30AM

Whew, how time flies! Another semester has come and gone and thanks go out to all of you for your support of ASU for another semester. Good luck to everyone with their finals!!

Dead day meeting 04/20/04 - 10:55AM

This is just let everyone know that there will be a meeting during dead day. Usually, dead day is used to present candidates for next semester, but stay tuned for an update once what we will do is determined.

New section - ASU Voice! 04/11/04 - 11:49PM

This week, the ASU web page has a brand new section: ASU Voice. This section was created as a place where ASU can publish editorials, thoughts, or comments about any topic related to anime.

To start the section, we have an editorial made by Andy, ASU's main founding father and current staff advisor. It is a good read regarding the disappointing packaging quality of the Azumanga Daioh North American release. Also, you can share your thoughts about the articles published in the forums.

Plese support our food drive! 04/06/04 - 12:50AM

This is just a request and reminder to support ASU with the snack sale on every meeting. All we get from the food sale will help for the Anime Expo trip, and well, anime + Japanese snacks = good ^_^

Second fighting game tournament update 04/06/04 - 12:35AM

Some new information has been decided on the gaming tournament:

For full details, please check the other activities section. You will also find information on how to help us decide the games to be played next tournament.

No meeting this week 04/06/04 - 12:30AM

This is a remainder that due to Good Friday, there will be no meeting this week. We will continue our meetings on Friday, April 16 with our regular schedule.

Con trip plans update 03/30/04 - 12:00AM

The good news: the money required for the preregistration of those signed up for the trip has been succesfully raised, and the amount will be send to AX as soon as possible. In other words, we will have our spots for the con reserved pretty soon.

The bad news (YMMV): up to this point, we have reached the limit of the amount of people that can go given the current transportation facilities (15 persons). This does not mean that we are not taking anyone else; however, in case that you become interested to come along (and you can afford it), it will be necessary to procure additional transportation and it will be up to everyone else to agree in case that the cost per person increases.

For discussion on the con trip, you can visit this thread at the ASU forums.

Second fighting game tournament 03/29/04 - 11:50PM

After the relative success of the first tournament, ASU is proud to announce the second ASU fighting game tournament of the semester! The tournament will be on the last day of classes (April 29th) and will be at the same time and location as before. For (preliminary) information, please visit the other activities section.

Schedule adjustments 03/29/04 - 11:40PM

Considering the current situation of our titles, which include taking Chrno Crusade out of the schedule because of licensing and a shortage of Futatsu no Spica episodes, we will make some adjustments to the schedule for the rest of the semester. The spot used by Chrno Crusade will be used for potential candidates for next semester, and the spot used by Futatsu no Spica will be used for an extra episode of the same title unless a new episode is released. This week, the episode to be sampled out is Mousou Dairinin (Paranoia Agent).

If this sounds confusing, you can always go and see next meeting's schedule ^_^;;

Con trip plans update 03/23/04 - 11:30PM

This Friday, March 26th at 5:00PM (i.e. after the showing) we will have a meeting to discuss the aspects of the trip (transportation, lodging, etc) among the people who have given their deposit and therefore confirmed as attendees. Please try to make it as most likely decisions that will shape the future of the trip will be made!!

Due to the very high interest in going to Anime Expo this year, we will most likely have to cap the number of people attending the convention VERY soon. It is likely that this Friday will be the day to reach such a decision, during the con trip meeting. By very conservative estimates, the least expensive cost for ASU members to attend the convention will be around $130 total (i.e. minus the deposit people have already given). Of course, the more money we can raise from now until the end of June, the cheaper the price per person will be so, please support Gaspar's "ASU Mobile Battleship Food Stand (tm) - Spring 2004 Edition" every Friday!!

Fighting game tournament update 03/23/04 - 11:25PM

The final details of the gaming tournament have been settled, including the final game list and prizes to be awarded. Please go to the other activities section to check out all the details. We hope to see you al there!

Twin Spica episode shortage 03/23/04 - 11:20PM

Due to the lack of available episodes of this ASU-popular series, Twin Spica will be shown on an episode availability basis as an Officer's Spot title. This week's ep. 8 will be shown since it is available but, next week who knows!

Con trip plans update 03/09/04 - 3:05PM

This is a reminder for those interested in joining the Anime Expo trip. We are still accepting the $20 advance payment to secure a spot for the trip. If we have enough people, it will be possible to obtain a group discount registration fee, and have a better price on gas and lodging.

Now, if you don't have the $20 right now and later you decide that you want to join the trip as an ASU member, the sooner you can decide so, the better as we will probably have to cap the number of con-goers at one point in time in order to assure the comfortable/safe travel of all members of the ASU Con Trip Party.

Puchi Puri * Yuushi comes back 03/09/04 - 3:10PM

The members have spoken, and Puchi Puri * Yuushi makes a comeback into the regular schedule taking over Shingetsutan Tsukihime, which ended last week. The order of the titles will remain the same, with Yuushi now starting the meetings.

Slumber party update 03/02/04 - 12:45AM

The date of the slumber party has moved from March 7th to March 14th. This week, we can have a longer slumber party thanks to the beginning of Spring Break (no school the following day!)

Anime Society of UTEP: 1998-2004 03/02/04 - 12:30AM

In 1998, the Anime Society of UTEP was founded. Sadly, as of this semester (and six years after) we will no longer be able to use the name of the "Anime Society of UTEP". The officers, enlightened by their great wisdom (and creativity ;-), decided to keep the acronym of ASU. As of this week, this organization will be known as the "Anime Society at the University".

Expect the web page to be updated with the new name.

ASU has died. And from the ashes, ASU has emerged. Long live ASU!

New title candidate list 03/01/04 - 11:50PM

Last week Fumoffu ended. This week Shingetsutan Tsukihime ends. What this means is that we need to pick a title that will take over the empty slot, and voting will take place this week.

The following is the list of titles (in alphabetical order) from which the new regular title will come up:

Each member will vote for two titles, and the title with the most votes will win. The winner will be announced during the week and will appear in next week's schedule.

We encourage our members to research the titles before the meeting so an informed choice can be made, since Animenfo is not the best place to find objective reviews.

Spring 2004 first "Slumber Party" 02/23/04 - 11:40PM

So, anyone misses our traditional Slumber Parties? Yes? Well, good news: the first slumber party already has a tentative date: Sunday, March 7th at Steve's.

For the new members (or the misinformed), a "Slumber Party" is nothing more than an unofficial meeting we have at someone's place for the whole day. These gatherings are used to get to know each other better, and to see additional titles that we don't show in the regular meetings. Candidates are often shown for the first time in Slumber Parties, so this is a good way to see what's new!

Stay tuned for more information.

Con trip plans update 02/23/04 - 11:35PM

This is a reminder for those interested in joining the Anime Expo trip. On Friday, March 5th we will be collecting a $20 non-refundable deposit to begin making serious arrangements for the trip (start to contact places, people, etc.) If for whatever reason later on you decide not to attend to con, unfortunately, we won't refund any money (hence the non-refundable part). Depending on the levels of the ASU reserves, we may or may not request more money in the upcoming weeks in order to send in the electronic registrations for the convention. Once we have an assured number of con-goers, we can start making official decisions concerning lodging, transportation, etc.

Now, if you don't have the $20 right now and later you decide that you want to join the trip as an ASU member, the sooner you can decide so, the better as we will probably have to cap the number of con-goers at one point in time in order to assure the comfortable/safe travel of all members of the ASU Con Trip Party.

Series finales 02/23/04 - 11:30PM

Well, series come and series go. This week, Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu is coming to an end, and next week will be the turn of Shingetsutan Tsukihime.

On the positive side, this also means that a new series will be coming up. Stay tuned to see what will be the candidates for taking up the new slot.

Schedule update 02/16/04 - 12:45PM

This is just to let everyone know that starting next week's meeting (February 27th), the schedule will change slightly, with the announcments being done at the end of the second hour (2:50PM). This means that every title before 3:00PM will start ten minutes earlier, so if you are looking for a specific series, please keep this in mind to be in time for your favorite title.

Con trip plans update 02/16/04 - 12:40PM

The con plans are still going on, and we are still looking for people who is interested of going to Anime Expo. If you are interested and would like to get more information and/or sign-up for the trip, please talk to the officers at the end of this week's meeting. Remember, the more the merrier (and cheaper)!

Schedule change next week 02/09/04 - 9:50PM

Due to schedule conflicts, next week's meeting (February 20th) will be from 2:00PM to 5:00PM. This means that we will not have the officer's spot nor an additional title. The final schedule will be posted after this week's meeting, so stay tuned.

Intensive Beginner's Japanese lesson this Friday 02/12/04 - 12:15PM

I forgot to ask the webmaster to include this so, I'm typing it here myself. Some new people have started to attend the Japanese classes imparted by Suzuki-sensei on Saturdays in LART 403. However, since the lessons depend on knowledge gained from the prior lesson, Suzuki-sensei has kindly offered to have a special intensive beginner's lesson THIS FRIDAY (2/13) @ 6:00 PM so that people can catch up. If you're interested in coming on Saturdays to learn some Japanese but were afraid that it was too late, this is your chance!!

I guess that since we'll have a break between 5:00 (end of ASU's meeting) and 6:00 (the start of the class), we can either have a potty/food break or I can show you guys some more of the stuff from the new season in Japan. I guess we can make the decision tomorrow ...

Membership drive 02/09/04 - 9:40PM

There will be a membership drive at the beginning of this week's meeting. If you are a previous member or a potential new member and meet the requirements, and is interested to join us, please assist to this week's meeting on time before the showing of the first title.

Con trip plans update 02/09/04 - 9:25PM

After the survey last week. it has been decided that this year the con trip will be done to Anime Expo 2004.

Stay tuned for more information regarding pricing, hosting, transportation, registration and other details. Meanwhile, if you are interested to go to the convention, contact any of the officers so we can consider the amount of people for estiimates. Talk to the officers only if you are seriously considering to go. This will help us plan the trip with more accuracy.

Con trip plans 02/02/04 - 1:05PM

We are starting to consider the different choices for this year's convention trip. So far, the main candidates are Anime Expo 2004, Pacific Media Expo 2004, and A-kon 2004. On next meeting, we will talk a little on our past con experiences, as well as the pros and cons on the different choices.

Slumber party request 02/02/04 - 1:00PM

We are planning to make the first slumber party of the semester sometime soon. We are looking for a comfortable place where we can all have fun and enjoy anime together; so, if anyone is willing to be such host, please let the officers know about it.

"Free" conversational Japanese classes 01/26/04 - 12:50PM

Don't forget about the "free" (as in "voluntary" donation) conversational Japanese classes with Suzuki-san on Saturdays at 1:00PM, at Liberal Arts Building (LART) room 403. Everyone is invited to come!

Officer elections 01/21/04 - 9:15PM

This week the officer elections will take place on Friday at 2:00PM. The election process will begin with some words from the candidates followed by members voting for each officer. We will be accepting nominations up to the moment the election process begins, so in case you are considering to become an officer, the following is a description of the duties of each officer and the candidates running for each position so far

President:

The president shall be the representative of the organization. He/she shall look over all activities of the organization, make an emergency decision, and authorizes any expenditures (if applicable). He/she is also responsible for propaganda (flyers) which has to be approved by the other officers.

Vice President:

The vice president must be able to take over the presidents duties when he/she is absent. He/she also performs tasks delegated by the president.

Treasurer

The treasurer shall be responsible for all the financial matters of the organization (if any). He/she shall control the flow of money in and out the organization with the consent of the officers. The treasurer shall prepare bimonthly financial reports during the semester.

Secretary

The secretary shall be responsible for keeping record of the minutes during the meetings. He/she shall review the minutes of the previous meeting and he/she shall review them at the beginning of the next meeting. He/she also keeps track of the schedule and keeps a copy of the attendance roster (and the president keeps the original).

Remember that becoming an officer is not a matter of receiving a benefit or status within the organization, but of giving your time and effort to help everyone have a better experience during the ASU meetings and other activities.

Candidates are up! 01/14/04 - 3:50PM

Here are the official ASU candidates for the Spring 2004 semester:

Action (in alphabetical order):

Non-action (in alphabetical order):

Each member will vote for 8 titles (4 action and 4 non-action). We encourage the members to research the titles before the meeting so an informed choice can be made (although we would take the reviews on Animenfo with a grain of salt, if you know what we mean). All the titles have been screened on campus either as returning titles (Naruto, Tsukihime, Ultra Maniac, Yucie and Fumoffu) or as stuff shown during last Dead Day (the rest of the titles).

The ballots will be counted and the winners for each category announced. The winners will be shown in the order listed on the next meeting page. Oh yeah, for those wondering where Stellvia went, it has been licensed as stated by AN Entertainment's John Oppliger. Concerning the officers, they will be nominated and presented during this time (1:00 to 1:35) as well.

Alright, see you all on Friday!!
