College of Business Administration 50th Anniversary

TIMELINE & MILESTONES

BIRTH OF THE COLLEGE

1967

  • The School of Business Administration was established in September 1967 as one of the five schools that constitute the University
  • The College went through a transition from Bachelor of Arts to Bachelor of Business Administration
  • Classes were initially held in Bell Hall.

1973

  • COBA received approval to create the MBA program (which launched in the fall)

BUILDING FROM THE GROUND UP

1973 - 1982

  • Courses were taught in the Liberal Arts Building

1982

  • Dean Hasty lead the construction of the new Business Administration building

1983

  • Official opening of the new College of Business Administration building

1984

  • The Bureau of Business and Economic Research from the college published the El Paso Economic Review and the Southwest Journal of Business Economics 

NATIONAL ACCREDITATION

1989

  • UTEP received national accreditation for both Bachelor and Master Degree Programs in Business and Accounting by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business

1996

  • Along with personnel from the Texas Center for Border and Economic Development, professor Thomas Fullerton helped lay the groundwork for the Border Region Modeling Project

ADDITION OF NEW PROGRAMS

1999

  • UTEP partners with Boeing to create the AMBA Program
  • COBA partners with JP Morgan Chase Bank to offer new AMBA to the public

2003

  • The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved the proposal for a new International Business Doctoral Program

2004

  • The Ph.D. Program begins

2007

  • UTEP "re-launches" the AMBA program with two large cohorts hosted by the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce and Wells Fargo Bank

EXPANDING INFLUENCE WITH NEW RESEARCH

2010

  • Opening of the Graduate Business Center in downtown Chase building 
  • Approval of new Seal
  • MBA Program receives first national recognition. Designated #1 for four years and Best of the Best for 9 years
  • Launch of Executive Masters of Business Administration in January and the Full Time Masters of Business Administration program in the fall

2012

  • Mike Loya Center for Innovation and Commerce was founded. The Center connects the College of Business Administration and the College of Engineering

2014

  • Launching of the joint BS/MBA degree programs that enabled undergraduate students to obtain a BS in their discipline and an MBA from COBA in a compressed five-year format
  • The Center for Hispanic Entrepreneurship (CFHE), a research entity within the College of Business Administration, was established to conduct research in new business creation and to assist in the development of Hispanic businesses

2015

  • Hunt Institute for Global Competitiveness was founded. Serves as a multidisciplinary research platform for the creation and application of practical research in order to help foster the region's competitive capacity

2016

  • College of Business Administration faculty and ADP Management have developed a curriculum created to help interested University students expand their knowledge of practice and theory of HCM

2017

  • Launch of Lockheed Martin Academy
  • Launch of Prudential Academy
