Phi Alpha Honor Society

The purposes of this Phi Alpha chapter shall be:

  1. To recognize and promote scholastic achievement among undergraduate and graduate students in the social work program at the University of Texas at El Paso.
  2. To recognize, improve, and further the humanitarian goals and ideals of social work through academic achievement.
  3. To foster a closer bond among students, faculty, and practitioners of social work.
  4. To stimulate students’ interest in preparation for a career in social work.
  5. To encourage continued study and research in social work.
  6. To recognize professional social workers and others whose service, contributions and leadership are held in high esteem.

Membership
Any undergraduate or graduate social work student at the University of Texas at El Paso who meets the qualifications set forth by the social work faculty committee and board members shall be eligible for active membership.The current minimum requirement of GPA for graduate and undergraduate students are 3.75 and 3.5 respectively.

Students are selected by the faculty members of the Department of Social Work and will be informed by the Faculty Advisor of Phi Alpha.

Each chapter may select two persons each year for honorary membership. This recognition is available to persons outside the program who have made a significant contribution to the program and/or society.

Student Association of Social Work (SASW)

Mission

Student Association of Social Workers (SASW) at the University of Texas at El Paso is an active student organization aimed at enhancing social work students’ learning experience by encouraging active participation at the University of Texas at El Paso and the local community at large.

Goals

  • To encourage the empowerment of students’ interest in the field of social work.
  • To promote student participation in the university and community life by:
    1. encouraging student involvement in the university activities.
    2. having officers alternate the duty of actively representing student interests and concerns to faculty and the larger UTEP community.
    3. encouraging participation in community activities that are in accordance with SASW’s philosophy.
  • To have an elected Board of Officers who will represent and coordinate student activities within the university and community.
  • To promote students’ awareness of the social work program within the university, the social work profession, and the community.

Membership Requirements

  • Must declare social work as major
  • Must pay $20 annual membership fee (membership dues are not refundable)
  • Must register at Minetracker: https://minetracker.utep.edu/
  • Must complete 20 credits which include participating in various activities throughout the year. These events include but are not limited to various fundraising events, attending monthly board meetings, giving donations, or engaging in community service opportunities.
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.0

Paid membership entitles you to vote on organizational business. SASW dues are applied towards debts incurred through any SASW activity and provide valuable “seed” money for SASW fundraisers. Membership is open to students pursuing a bachelor degree in social work.

    1. encouraging student involvement in the university activities.
    2. having officers alternate the duty of actively representing student interests and concerns to faculty and the larger UTEP community.
    3. encouraging participation in community activities that are in accordance with SASW’s philosophy.
  • To have an elected Board of Officers who will represent and coordinate student activities within the university and community.
  • To promote students’ awareness of the social work program within the university, the social work profession, and the community.

  • Must complete 6 event points and 10 donation points per academic year
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.0
