Getting Started


Now that you have been admitted into the online degree program of your choice, here's what you need to do to get set up and start work on your studies.

Your Student Account

Your first step as a student is to activate your student account.

Activate your student account

Access my.utep.edu

Once you have done this you may log in to my.utep.edu. This is a a web portal that connects students to all their online services in one convenient location. Here, you may access your UTEP account, username and password, connect to your Live Mail email, Blackboard, Goldmine, mSpace, MyStatus and Wiki services. You must use your @miners.utep.edu email (or preferred email) for all University correspondence. 

Make an Advising Appointment

Most students must be advised before registration. The process is slightly different for undergraduate and graduate students and also depends on the program. If you are unsure about who your advisor is or the next steps you can contact UTEP Connect Student Success team at ucadvising@utep.edu or at 1-800-684-UTEP (8837).

Undergraduate Advising

Students accepted into a UTEP Connect undergraduate program will receive assistance from a Student Success Advisor throughout their undergraduate career. Depending on their program, most students who have fewer than 45 credit hours will be advised and registered by their Student Success Advisor. After 45 hours (depending on program), the Student Success Advisor will help in seamlessly transferring the student to their designated department advisor for degree advising.

Graduate Advising

Students pursuing a graduate degree in one of our UTEP Connect programs will be advised by their departmental advisors.

Student Success Advisors are available to assist UTEP Connect undergraduate and graduate students in other aspects of their learning experiences: troubleshooting Blackboard challenges, providing access to resources, and general guidance. Be sure to contact them if you have any questions or wish to schedule an appointment at ucadvising@utep.edu or 1-800-684-UTEP (8837).

Log in to Blackboard

Blackboard is your online learning platform, your virtual classroom. It is accessible through your MyUTEP dashboard. Blackboard has virtual classrooms where you will turn in assignments/quizzes, have discussions with classmates and receive important information and deadlines. Most courses will appear in your Blackboard account on the first day of class (only some will appear early). If you have any technical difficulties with your Blackboard account, please contact the Help Desk at helpdesk@utep.edu or 915-747-HELP (4357).

Get Your Degree Plan

You must receive your official degree plan from your advisor. Once you’ve been admitted to UTEP, you can access your degree evaluation online in Goldmine for planning purposes.

How to Run a Degree Evaluation in CAPP

If your transfer credits have been evaluated, they will be reflected along with other courses you’ve taken at UTEP. The degree evaluation will also indicate what coursework you have left to complete. Please contact your Student Success Advisor if you have any questions about the degree evaluation.

BMS students’ coursework will not be reflected on the degree plans in CAPP. Please refer to the degree plan developed by the BMS Department.

Register for Classes with a CRN...

A Course Reference Number (CRN) is a unique 5-digit identifier assigned to a class for registration purposes. After you have received your CRNs, follow the steps below to register:

  1. Go to my.utep.edu
  2. Enter your UTEP username and password.
  3. Once logged in, click on the Goldmine link.
  4. Next, click on the Registration link.
  5. Click on Add/Drop Classes link.
  6. The first time you register for courses each semester, you will find a Financial Liability Agreement and Acknowledgement of Withdrawal Procedures. Please read and choose an answer.
  7. Choose the semester and year you are registering for in the Select a Term drop down menu. Click the Submit button.
  8. Click on Add/Drop Classes.
  9. At the bottom of the page, enter all CRNs (provided to you by your advisor) in the text boxes under Add Classes Worksheet. Click on Submit Changes.
  10. Once submitted, your registered courses should be listed under Current Schedule.

...or Drop a Course (if needed)

Before dropping any course we strongly encourage you to contact the Financial Aid Office at faonline@utep.edu to find out how your financial aid eligibility could be impacted by dropping the course(s). Also, contact your assigned Student Success Advisor to receive assistance with updating your degree plan and/or course selections. (Note: if you are only enrolled in one course you will be withdrawing from the semester, rather than dropping the course):

To drop a course, email records@utep.edu and cc ucadvising@utep.edu with the following information:  

  • Your name and Student ID
  • Course(s) information (e.g.: CRN: 68974 UNIV 1301); this information can be found on the checklist provided by your Student Success Advisor
  • Brief statement about why you are dropping

Be aware that if you drop any course on or after the first day of classes for that course, you will still be responsible for a percentage of the tuition. Please contact Student Business Services (SBS) for additional tuition information at sbs@utep.edu or 915-747-5116. Pay For Your Course(s)

Students are responsible for taking care of financial obligations each semester. We know that paying for college is an important consideration, and UTEP can help in a couple of different ways. Learn more about financial aid and scholarships. Strudents will be invoiced by Student Business Services.
