The Institute for Manufacturing and Materials Management (IM^3) has established a comprehensive information management system which is being used to support a variety of activities within the region. The system includes a bank of unix workstations,personal computers and macintosh systems linked within an ethernet novell network.

Currently, three of the work - stations are setup as internet web servers. One provides the home pages for department, a second provides a clearing house for local environmental data and regional GIS files.The third system is dedicated to the Rio Grande FreeNet providing free access to the internet for individuals and non-profit organizations within the El Paso/Cd. Juarez.

The applications include an integrated suite of programs ranging from industry standard relational database systems (RDBMS), Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The system also includes graphics design and publications software, multi-media production tools and development software for customized applications. Standard Office on the systems range from relational database system management IM^3 houses a workshop environment with up to 20 seats for hands-on training and workshops.

In cooperation with UTEP's Center for Environmental Resource Management, we have assisted in providing training for several workshops ranging from Internet Access to Global Positioning and GIS introductory training. The facilities are open to the public and are being scheduled for other training sessions through out the year.

IM^3 is working on a number of projects which are helping foster closer communications and technology sharing withing the international region. We are working to extend the unversity network vi telecommunication to the City of ElPaso, establish direct access to the Rio Grande FreeNet which is inturn connected via microwave to the University of Juarez. We are establishing the basic telecommunications links via microwave, T-1 digital and proposed ISDN lines, providing internal expertise in telecommunications and area network technology.
