Dr. Harris is Past Director of the Laboratory for Environmental Biology (now the UTEP Biodiversity Collections), Curator of Higher Vertebrates, and Curator of Vertebrate Paleobiology. He also is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Texas at El Paso. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of New Mexico in 1965, majoring in vertebrate biology and minoring in geochronology.

Although trained primarily as a mammalogist, research in recent years has primarily been in Pleistocene vertebrate paleontology. Current research projects include study of the Pleistocene fauna of Sierra Diablo Cave, Hudspeth County, TX.

Current projects also include continual updating of the web book, Pleistocene Vertebrates of Arizona, New Mexico, and Trans-Pecos Texas. An earlier version (April 2013) also is available as an e-book.
