José de Piérola (Professor)

José de Piérola is the author of Fabulations (2018), Máquina del tiempo (2015), Pishtaco Slayer (2011), Un beso del inferno (2010), Summa caligramática (2009), Sur y Norte (2008), El camino de regreso (2007), and Shatranj: El juego de los reyes (2005). He has translated into Spanish L’étranger by Albert Camus (2022), Dracula by Bram Stoker (2021), and The Art of Fiction by Walter Besant and Henry James (2007). He has also translated from Spanish to Quechua Magic-Religious Tales From Lucanamarca (2017) by José María Arguedas. His novel Un beso del infierno won the Short Novel Prize awarded by the Reserve Bank of Peru, his short story “In the Belly of the Night” won the Max Aub International Short Story Award in Spain, and his short story “Lápices” won the Short Story Biennial awarded by Copé in Peru. His fiction has been anthologized in Peru, Mexico, Spain, France and USA. He earned a Ph.D. in Literature at the University of California, San Diego. His work revolves around issues of displacement, immigration and political violence, but he is also interested in the construction of the self and cultural misunderstanding. His current work in progress includes a novel set at the end of the Eighteenth Century in the Peruvian Andes, and Minding Fiction, a critical study about the representation of the mind in fiction.

También ha traducido del español al inglés Cuentos religioso-mágicos quechuas de Lucanamarca (2017) de José María Arguedas. Su novela Un beso del infierno ganó el Premio de Novela Corta del Banco Central de Reserva del Perú, su cuento “En el vientre de la noche” ganó el Premio Internacional de cuento Max Aub en España, y su cuento “Lápices” ganó la Bienal de Cuento otorgado por Copé en el Perú. Sus cuentos han sido antologados en el Perú, México, España y en los Estados Unidos. Obtuvo su grado de Doctor en Literatura en la Universidad de California, San Diego. Su trabajo gira en torno a temas relacionados con el desplazamiento, immigración y violencia política, pero también está interesado en la construcción de la identidad y las diferencias culturales. Está escribiendo una novela situada al fin del Siglo XVIII en los Andes peruanos, y el trabajo crítico Minding Fiction, un estudio panorámico de la representación de la conciencia en la ficción.
