The Creative Writing Department at the University of Texas at El Paso consists of a community of writers who engage the workshop as a springboard to begin drafting, writing, re-writing, and writing all over again, in a challenging and supportive environment. As the only Bilingual M.F.A. program in the nation, the diversity of academic and writing is superlative, producing many award-winning manuscripts (see publications and Awards). The Undergraduate program is equally excellent and offers the undergrad student the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing, consisting of 72 degree units.
However, an excellent writing program does not consist of writing workshops alone, but is constructed around the life of writers, the community fostered, the reading and literary events, the guest writers and speakers, public reading series, teaching colloquia, high-quality student produced literary journals, and the participation and engagement of the border community where it resides.
At the moment, M.F.A. students come from all over the United States and Latin America. Prospective M.F.A. students are encouraged to contact our current M.F.A. students, who are ultimately our best advertisement, and inquire about their experience, their work and/or any other question they might have.
