Awards:
Colombian writer Óscar Godoy Barbosa, former CRW Master Program's student, recently won the Premio Ñ-Ciudad de Buenos Aires by his last novel Te acuerdas del mar awarded by the prestigious Argentinian journal Clarín.
Silvia Aguilar Zeleny, M.F.A. candidate, won the Concurso de Cuento Ciudad de La Paz, 2012, sponsored by The Institute of Culture of Baja California (ISC), with her book “Nenitas.,”
Rubén Varona, M.F.A. candidate, was a finalist in the prestigious Premio Iberoamericano Planeta-Casa de América de Narrativa 2012 for the novel “La Secta de los Asesinos.”
Juana Moriel Payne, former student in the M.F.A .in Creative Writing program, won the Publicaciones 2012 Award, sponsored by the Chihuahua Institute of Culture (ICHICULT), for her novel “Trigueña.”
Julio César Pérez Méndez, current M.F.A. candidate, was a finalist in the Concurso de Novela Corta (Short Novel Contest, 2011) sponsored by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
Laura Cesarco Eglin, former student in the M.F.A. program, was nominated for the Pushcart Prize 2011 for her poem, “Secrets of Old Age.”
Brian D. Anderson, former student in the M.F.A. in Creative Writing program, won the Bronze Remi Award, in the Screenplay Romantic Comedy category at the 43rd World Fest-Houston International Film Festival 2010, for his script, “The Moon Illusion.”

“Llamar El Agua Por Su Nombre” (2010) a collection of poems by Laura Cesarco Eglin (Uruguayan), had her M.F.A. thesis at UTEP published by Mouthfeel Press. She was editor in chief of “Border Senses” literary journal (2010-2011). She recently published “Sastría” (Yaugurú, 2011) and now is pursing a Ph.D. at Colorado University at Boulder.
Yuri Herrera, who is now pursuing a Ph.D. at Berkeley, had his M.F.A. thesis done at UTEP, “Trabajos del Reino,” selected as the winner of the Concurso Nacional de Novela Jóven de México (National Mexican Prize for Young Novelist). He recently published “Señales Que Precederán Al Final Del Mundo,” an acclaimed novel in Latin America and Spain.
Betina González who is now pursuing a Ph.D. at Pittsburgh, had her M.F.A .thesis, “Arte Menor,” selected as the winner of the Premio Clarín de Novela 2006. The novel was published by the book company Alfaguara of the group Santillana. She is also the author of a collection of short stories called “Juegos De Playa” (2008).
Gabriela Aguirre was born in Queretaro, Mexico. Her M.F.A. thesis, “La Frontera: Un Cuerpo” (Tierra Adentro), was selected as the winner of Premio Nacional de Poesía Jóven Elias Nandino 2003 (National Prize for Young Poets) at Mexico.
Sheryl Luna won the Andres Montoya Poetry Prize for “Pity the Drowned Horses,” published by the University of Notre Dame. She was a finalist for the 2003 National Poetry Series book award.
Javier Huerta, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in English at Berkeley, had his M.F.A. thesis selected as the winner of the UC Irvine Chicano-Latino Literary Award for 2005.
