Work related to the new Interdisciplinary Research Building (IDRB) will temporarily impact vehicle and pedestrian traffic along Wiggins Way, but the road will remain open to two-way traffic.

UTEP Map
On Thursday, July 20, crews from Hensel Phelps, the contractor working on the IDRB project at Sun Bowl Drive and University Avenue, will close the east half of Wiggins Way at Electric Road and the IC-17 parking lot next to the Bioscience Research Building. The area will remain closed for approximately two months while crews install new hydronic lines to carry hot and cold water for heating and air conditioning to the new building.

Two-way vehicle traffic will be routed to the west side of the street, where a one-lane road will allow traffic to pass in one direction at a time. Drivers are asked to slow down to 5 mph in the area and allow oncoming traffic to pass before proceeding through the one-lane area. Signs will mark the detour and the reduced speed zone.

Pedestrian traffic on the east side of Wiggins will be directed to cross to the west side of the street prior to reaching the construction area, or routed along the south side of Bell Hall to Electric Road.

After the east side of Wiggins Way reopens, the west side will close for another two months so crews can complete the piping work on the other side of the street.

Motorists are asked to slow down and use extreme caution in the area.
