Harvey Goldner
"When I was a child, my lesbian aunt, Suzanne, would spend a week or so every summer at my family's vacation home on Lake Wenatchee, here in Washington State. This was before the era of motorcycle helmets, and Suzanne would arrive on her blue Bugatti, her red hair streaming, flaming. While tossing back straight shots of my father's precious scotch, she would mesmerize my twin brother Phil and I by reading aloud her favorite poets, chiefly Elizabeth Bishop. Eventually, my brother Phil became
an alcoholic & was killed in a motorcycle accident, and I began writing poems."
tony blair in a tiny car
a golden boy
in a silver toy
towed
by 50 feral chihuahuas
rode
round & round the town
square
& the fat
americans gathered there
bounced up and down
like beach balls (yellow and green)
screamed: god hump the queen
& then sang this refrain: we think this brit is quite insane but we don't care he's tony blair his floating eyes! his flashing hair!
then the fifty chihuahuas
feral & yapping
& tony blair
entered the hall
where
fat
representatives from all 50 states sat
clapping
& eating bananas
then tiny tony blair
stood up on a big chair
opened his mouth & out came…air!
& all the americans gathered there
tossed their banana peels everywhere
(yellow & green)
screamed: god hump the queen
& then sang this refrain: we think this brit is quite insane but we don't care he's tony blair his floating eyes! his flashing hair!
