Water Quality Control Plan for Campo Band of Kumeyaay Indians

1. Purpose and Objectives: The purpose of this study is to develop a water quality control plan to measure water quality trends as well as a cross border planning mechanism for long range protection of the natural resources on tribal lands. The objective is to have a sense of the water quality underneath the tribal land so that future policy could be implemented in regard to the data from the study.

2. Funding: $30,000 from the EPA.

3. Partners: EPA and the Kumeyaay Native American Tribe

4. Description: Many Native American Reservations across the Southwestern United States suffer from a scant supply of water. The Kumeyaay Tribe is engaged in an effort to develop a water quality control plan to measure water quality trends so that the tribe will be able to survive into the next century. A study must be conducted to give the tribe a sense of how critical its natural resource supply shortage is. Much of the land’s water supply can also be found in Mexico, so therefore the tribe needs cooperation from Mexican officials.

5. Status: Project is nearly complete.
