XIII Contemporary Mexican Literature Conference 2008

 

The University of Texas at El Paso is honored to invite El Paso and Ciudad Juárez to the XIII Congress on Contemporary Mexican Literature, which will take place on March 6-8 at the Tomas Rivera Conference Suite located at the Union East Building on campus.

The Conference will welcome more than a hundred speakers.  Among them, professors, researchers, and literature critics representing Mexican Universities such as The National Autonomous University of Mexico, Benemérita Universidad de Puebla (BUAP), the Iberoamericana University (UI), the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez (UACJ), the Autonomous University of México City (UACM), Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana, El Colegio de México (COLMEX), and the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur.  Participating Universities from the United States are Temple University, College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Texas Tech University, Rice University, Arizona State University and Colorado State University as well as other distinguished institutions.

This year, various panels will discuss the literary creations of authors from Northern México, short stories written by women, important works of different playwrights, and the relationship between literature and film. Other presenters will provide an overview on the work of renowned writers such as: Carmen Boullosa, Elena Garro, Josefina Vicens, Sergio Pitol, Luis Arturo Ramos, Cristina Rivera Garza and Federico Patán.

            The event is free of charge and open to the public. Attendants will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge on the discussed topics. A book sale will take place as well as writing workshops for young people, conducted by Alberto Blanco and Maricela Duarte at the Ysleta and Canutillo school districts.  Maricela Duarte will offer a poetry workshop for teenagers on Saturday 7, at 3 PM at the Tomas Rivera Center, Union Building, 3rd. Floord.

 The Contemporary Mexican Literature Conference is organized by the Department of Languages and Linguistics under the direction of Dr. Kirsten Nigro and is supported by the Texas Commission on the Arts, the Culture and Museums Department of El Paso, the Mexican Consulate in El Paso, several departments of the University of Texas at El Paso, Instituto Chihuahuense de la Cultura,  Canutillo Independent School District, Ysleta Independent School District as well as other generous private and nonprofit institutions of El Paso/Cd. Juárez area.

               This conference has been directed for thirteen years by Dr. Fernando García Núñez and Profesor Luis Arturo Ramos, Directors of the Revista de Literatura Mexicana Contemporánea, a literary review published by the University of Texas at El Paso in collaboration with Ediciones Eón de México.
