CHEMISTRY AND COMPUTER SCIENCE BUILDING "TOP OUT" CEREMONY

The construction of UTEP’s new Chemistry and Computer Science Building reached a milestone on May 21. Hundreds of people joined UTEP President Diana Natalicio at the job site to watch as the building’s final beam was hoisted to the top of the infrastructure during the University's "Topping Out" celebration.

GRANT AWARD

Dr. Gardea-Torresdey was awarded a grant (UTEP Principal Investigator) from the National Science Foundation/Environmental Protection Agency (Center for the Environmental Impact of Nanotechnology) Grant of $38,000,000 for the funding period of 10/01/08 to 09/01/13. Other Institutions awarded were: UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, UC Riverside, Columbia University, the Molecular Foundry at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, the University of Bremen in Germany, University College Dublin in Ireland, and the Universitat Rovirai Virgili in Spain. DR. JOSE' G. SANTIESTEBAN, DIRECTOR, CATALYST TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH COMPUTING LABORATORY, EXXONMOBIL PROCESS RESEARCH, VISITED UTEP AND DR. GARDEA'S LABORATORY

Dr. Jose' G. Santiesteban, Director, Catalyst Technology and Research Computing Laboratory, ExxonMobil Process Research, visited UTEP and Dr. Gardea's Laboratory on February 2007. He was invited by the Chemistry Dept. to give a seminar at the occasion of the opening of a new PhD in Chemistry at the UTEP Chemistry Dept. His presentation about the latest advancement in catalysis research encouraged the students a lot. Finally, he visited the laboratory of the Chemistry Dept. and the campus of UTEP.

EXPO CHEM 2006

DR. GARDEA WAS A PLENNARY SPEAKER IN THE EXPO CHEM 2006 CONFERENCE IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO AT MAYAGUEZ

This conference is organized every 10 years and distinguished scientists from all over the world were invited to speak. Dr. John Fenn, 2002 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and Dr. Luis Echegoyen, Director of the Chemistry Division of NSF were some of the distinguished plennary speakers who participated in the conference.

DR. BRADY

DR. BRADY IS THE PROGRAM MANAGER OF ONE OF DR. GARDEA'S LATEST GRANTS FUNDED BY SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES, EL PASO WATER UTILITIES AND CHIWAWA.

This grant proposes the use of nanoparticles to remove Silica from brackish solutions in the pre-treatment phase, before they are introduced to reverse osmosis desalination. Cesar Luna, a Ph.D student in Environmental Science and Engineering Ph.D Prorgram at UTEP, will be working in this project.
