The Student Engagement & Leadership Center employs multiple UTEP students each year to support our various initiatives that contribute to student engagement, leadership development, and student life on campus! Our interns gain practical experience through employment that supports their educational growth and enhances the development of critical skills such as time/project management, communication, and inclusive leadership. Students employed with the SELC are considered key contributors to the University and benefit from the relationships they build with peers and professionals across the institution.

Minimum Requirements:
- All applicants must upload an updated resume as part of their application in MineTracker

- Commitment to a one-year internship with no plans to graduate prior to May 2022.
- Ability to maintain full-time enrollment status (12 credit hours) during fall and spring semesters
- Exceptions can be made for students in their final semester (spring)
- Ability to work 19 hours (maximum) weekly between 8a and 5p
- Some weekend and evening work is required. Advance notice will be given.
- Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the institution during application process and throughout employment
- Must have and maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA throughout the academic year

Available Positions and Job Descriptions
Responsibilities of All Intern Positions
- Assist with all large-scale SELC programs
- Attend intern meetings, staff retreats, and trainings
- Deliver SELC presentations to campus partners, student organizations, and others
- Become knowledgeable in software Microsoft Teams, Trello, Outlook
- May serve on departmental committees
- Adjust work schedule as necessary on a weekly basis to assist with staffing at SELC events
- Assist with office coverage at SELC front desk area as needed
- Assist with responding to general questions in SELC inbox
- Contribute to a positive work environment
- Represent the SELC in a professional manner
- Includes but not limited to: wearing professional attire to work, being on time for all shifts, representing yourself appropriately in meetings, at events, and on social media

Social Media and Web Design (2)
Number of positions available: 2
This position is an hourly position paid at $8.00 per hour, up to 19 hours per week.
The Social Media and Web Design Intern is responsible for managing and updating all the SELC’s social media accounts and the department website. This includes Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (@UTEPSELC), and utep.edu/SELC. The SMWD interns will serve as brand ambassadors for the department and engage in content creation for social media platforms. These interns will be expected to support all programs and become knowledgeable in all areas of the SELC. This position reports to Assistant Director, Mallory Payan.
- Develop and maintain social media accounts, scheduling of content etc. for all relevant platforms
- Be comfortable using video for event/programming promotion and marketing \
- Ex: Use Instagram reels, video, and live features to promote events/programming
- Ex: Use Facebook video/live feature to promote events/programming
- Develop and maintain brand awareness and online reputation for the department
- Maintain and update departmental websites on a regular basis using the University website platform, Cascade
- Use social media tracker to keep track of insights, visits, likes, etc.
- Continuously engage in professional development (i.e. online webinars/workshops) to enhance social media, marketing and promotion knowledge and skills
- Attend SELC programming to provide social media coverage as necessary
- Events include but not limited to: Miner Welcome, Minerpalooza, Orange and Brew, Up All Night, Last Wednesday, Homecoming activities.

This position is an hourly position paid at $8.00 per hour, up to 19 hours per week.
The Front Desk Assistant is responsible for providing quality customer service and serving as a first-line contact to all guests visiting the Student Engagement & Leadership Center. These interns will be expected to have impeccable communication skills (written and verbal) and have both strong critical thinking and organizational skills. These students will be expected to become knowledgeable in both MineTracker software usage and all requirements for student organization leaders. These interns will be expected to support all programs and become knowledgeable in all areas of the SELC. This position reports to Assistant Director, Mallory Payan.
- Manage the front desk at the SELC office greeting all guests and offering timely assistance
- Oversee multiple departmental e-mail inboxes, providing timely and accurate responses
- Answer all incoming phone calls providing superior customer service and support to guests
- Assist the Student Organization Support team by managing:
- Student Org Event Requests
- Student Org Financial Requests
- Student Org MineTracker support questions
- Assist the Fraternity & Sorority Life team by managing:
- Chapter Roster Updates
- Grade Release Forms
- Chapter Invoices
- Attendance and participation documentation
- Provide detailed, organized and accurate files as requested by staff
- Manage assessment and data collection for various events/activities

Inclusion and Advocacy Intern (1)

This position is an hourly position paid at $8.00 per hour, up to 19 hours per week.
The Inclusion & Advocacy Intern assists in creating programs that enhance students’ understanding of social and cultural differences, the overall importance of inclusive leadership, various student identities to include but not limited to the LGBTQIA2S+ community, first-generation students, international students, and others. This position reports to the Coordinator for Leadership, Inclusion and Advocacy.
- Assist with the planning of the following events/activities including but not limited to:
- Various Heritage Months and Observances
- This Matters
- Rainbow Miner Graduation
- Develop and utilize campus partnerships (faculty, staff and students) to organize Inclusion and Advocacy programs and events
- Promote and market Inclusion programs across campus on all mediums to include the Inclusion Listserv
- Maintain accurate and appropriate files for each program/event/initiative including evaluations and assessments as required
- Serve on committees as necessary

Student Organization Intern (3)
Number of positions available: 3
This position is an hourly position paid at $8.00 per hour, up to 19 hours per week.
The Student Organization Support (SOS) team of interns assist in the development and management of over 250 student organizations at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) to ensure they are informed and in good standing. The intern team hosts office hours, supports student organization officers, and provides educational workshops to enhance student organization success. Additionally, the interns utilize MineTracker and EMS (space reservation software) to manage all student organization processes. This position reports to and is supervised directly by the Coordinator for Student Organizations.
- Assist with the planning of the following events/activities:
- Annual Registration Process
- Officer Training
- MineTracker 101 training sessions
- Advisor workshops and trainings
- Homecoming Activities for student organizations
- All student organization tabling opportunities
- Learn and understand all RSO-related policies, procedures, and regulations
- Assist with all RSO-related questions via e-mail, office hours, or in-person
- Develop expertise in MineTracker and EMS software systems
- Manage the review and approval of Event Requests from student organizations
- Create and distribute the weekly RSO listserv e-mails to RSO officers and advisors
- Support the management of all student organization reports and data

The Programming Board Chair assists in planning, executing, and assessing various campus events throughout the year including but not limited to Miner Welcome, Orange & Brew, the Union Gallery, International Food Fair, Up All Night and others. Being a member of a programming board means planning events for your peers to increase student engagement within the UTEP community. This position reports to the Coordinator for Campus Engagement.

Edge Engagement Ambassador (8)

This position is paid via a stipend. Students will work 15 hours per week and receive a total stipend of $4,000 for the year (July 2022 – June 2023).
The Edge Engagement Ambassador (EEA) is a student leadership position that integrates support for engagement, student success, and the UTEP Edge into one role. Housed within the Student Engagement and Leadership Center (SELC), EEAs will immerse themselves in a yearlong experience where the scope of their responsibilities will develop their skills in leadership, communication, teamwork, confidence, and other critical areas. This position reinforces UTEP’s commitment to achieving student success through a cross-campus approach that allows for consistency in messaging of UTEP’s student success plan and goals of the SELC. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Leadership, Inclusion and Engagement.
Student Engagement and Leadership Center Responsibilities
- Assist with the facilitation and execution of large-scale events such as Miner Welcome, Minerpalooza, Texas Western Gold Rush, etc.
- Facilitate leadership programs to include Leadership Pop Ups, First-Gen Fridays, Student Leadership Trainings (i.e., mentorship trainings), Leadership Week, etc.
- Assist with the planning, execution, and recruitment of students for the 21st Century Southwest Leadership Experience (annual leadership conference)
- Other responsibilities as assigned
UTEP Edge Responsibilities
- Serve as UTEP Edge ambassadors by facilitating presentations for students, faculty, and staff inside and outside of the classroom
- Engage with the UTEP Edge Fellows in a mentor/mentee role
- In partnership with the UTEP Edge Fellows host a UTEP Edge table during summer New Student Orientation
- Represent the leadership experience at Miner Welcome
- Participate in at least one additional UTEP Edge experience while in this role
Graduate Assistant - Leadership (1)

This position is a Masters Assistant position intended for a current Graduate Student.
The Leadership Development intern focuses on creating programs that enhance students’ leadership skills. Workshops and programs available range from emerging to advanced leaders helping students become self-aware, lead in diverse contexts, positively impacting their community and fostering collaborative relationships. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Campus Engagement, Leadership Development, and Inclusion Programs.
