Reception to follow presentation
Senior associate at the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP) since October 2006,
Cliff Adelman, Ph.D., plays a leading role in the organization's expansive national and
international portfolio of research initiatives in the areas of assessment, higher education
access and student mobility. He also continues to address issues that have been his focus
throughout his career, including degree completion rates, standardized testing, transfer
patterns and the role of community colleges, and has recently focused on bringing
international experience to the attention of U.S. higher education policymakers.
Prior to joining IHEP, Adelman served nearly 30 years as a senior research analyst at the
U.S. Department of Education. He contributed to key background studies of the high school curriculum for the
landmark report A Nation at Risk (1983) and designed the higher education follow-up to that report, Involvement
in Learning (1984), which served as a platform for the assessment movement in higher education over the
following decade. During his tenure at the Department of Education, he authored several studies that served as
benchmarks in education and helped set agendas for policymakers.
The author of three commercially published books and a member of various education-focused committees,
Adelman holds a bachelor's degree from Brown University and master's and doctoral degrees from the
University of Chicago. He has held positions at City College of New York, Roosevelt University, William
Paterson University of New Jersey and Yale University.

Millennium Lecture Series
The Millennium Lecture Series brings speakers to the UTEP campus to address topics that impact our society, culture and lives. The lectures in this series are intended to provoke our thinking and stimulate discussion about important issues of the day. This year's theme is "Issues in U.S. Public Higher Education." From Fall 2010 through Spring 2011, we will sponsor lectures that focus on such issues as: closing educational achievement gaps across demographic groups; preparing a competitive 21st century workforce; serving as a catalyst for regional economic development; and developing more sustainable funding models. We hope that you will join us in exploring these critical issues with our distinguished Millennium Lecturers.
