Baiomys brachygnathus—Short-faced Pygmy Mouse // Baiomys taylori—Northern Pygmy Mouse

Baiomys sp.—Pygmy MiceRegional Pleistocene distribution of Baiomys sp.

Van Devender and King (1971) recorded Baiomys from Artillery Mountains A, some 380 km northwest of the present Arizona distribution center. However, Mead et al. (2005) did not list Baiomys from the site, but did list Reithrodontomys; it is assumed here that the two mandibles were re-identified as the latter.

Baiomys taylori—Northern Pygmy MouseRegional Pleistocene distribution of Baiomys taylori.

The Northern Pygmy Mouse, true to its common name, is an extremely small neotomine rodent. Its current distribution is approximately the eastern half of Texas, from which it swings far south into Mexico and then northward again into extreme southwestern New Mexico and adjacent southeastern Arizona. The only fossil records from our region are from the extreme southeastern limit of the region, near the junction of the Pecos River with the Rio Grande, and in southern Chihuahua.

Mid/Late Wisconsin/Holocene: Jimenez Cave (Messing 1986).

Late Wisconsin: Cueva Quebrada (Lundelius 1984).

Literature. Lundelius 1984; Messing 1986.
