This relatively small fish lives in large lakes and rivers (Sublette et al. 1990). Its current range does not approach closely (map) to the southeastern New Mexican locality reported by Miller (1982).

The Gatuña Formation, from which the specimen was recovered, is a gravel and sand fill of the Pecos Valley and apparently straddles the Blancan and Irvingtonian Land Mammal Ages (Miller 1982).
