Census
Introduction
Every ten years, the U.S. conducts a census to count EVERYONE. Help us make UTEP count!
-
- Your information is confidential and protected by law
- It's about fair political representation
- It's about community service for a better quality of life
- The United States Constitution requires the population in the United States to be counted every 10 years.
- This is the third time a Census and a Presidential election will be held within the same year in U.S history.
About the Process
- In 2020, the census will implement new technology to make it easier than ever to respond to the census.
- When it is time to respond, most households will receive an invitation in the mail inviting them to respond online or with a paper questionnaire.
- For the first time, you will be able to respond online, by phone, as well as by mail. The census will use the data that the public has already provided to reduce follow-up visits.
- Less than 1% of households are counted in person by a census taker in remote areas such as parts of Maine, remote Alaska, and in select American Indian areas.
- All of the information provided to the census is confidential and safe.
Why it Matters
Federal funds, grants and support to states, counties and communities are based on population totals and breakdowns by sex, age, race and other factors. Your community benefits the most when the census counts everyone. When you respond to the census, you help your community get its fair share of more than $675 billion per year in federal funds spent on schools, hospitals, roads, public works and other resources based on census data.

Volunteer Opportunities
Our Census Ambassadors Program offers students the opportunity to learn about the Census, how they can promote it and provides them the skills necessary to properly engage in the community. Through our Service Learning Program at the Center for Community Engagement we recruit volunteers to participate and assist with the events we have planned for the Spring 2020 semester. As Census Day approaches we need more and more volunteers to help us promote this historic once in a decade event.
For a Census Ambassador to efficiently and effectively promote the Census they must first attend a MANDATORY 1 hour training Session. There will be 2 scheduled training sessions at the beginning of the Spring semester. During these sessions the Census Ambassadors will learn everything they need to promote the upcoming 2020 Census. We will also be providing them with the resources necessary to do so. After the training sessions, we will be providing additional information for any events the Steering Complete Count Committee schedules.
