UTEP is located in El Paso County, a highly livable, bi-cultural community of more than 800,000 people, with affordable homes and attractive neighborhoods. El Paso is regularly ranked among the safest large cities in the United States. Located in the Chihuahuan desert, El Paso is shielded by the Franklin Mountains, and the city experiences more than 300 days of sunshine annually and a dry climate, making it possible to enjoy outdoor activities year-round.

The city of El Paso is adjacent to both the state of New Mexico and the country of Mexico, making it a leading area for cultural diversity and border health research.
