Dean of the College of Education

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Education. The University seeks a proven leader to act as a dynamic advocate for education across the University and a vibrant binational, bilingual interconnected community of more than two million people. The Dean will work with students, faculty, university leaders, and regional stakeholders to implement an ambitious vision for the College rooted in UTEP’s Access and Excellence mission and a deep commitment to social equity and opportunity. A recent Brookings Institution study has ranked UTEP first among public research universities in the promotion of social mobility among graduates.

The Dean will extend a strong history of collaborative efforts to prepare teachers and other professionals in a research context that capitalizes on UTEP’s pivotal role in the El Paso region’s interdependent educational system: an estimated 75% of the teachers in the region’s school districts earned degrees at UTEP and more than 80% of UTEP graduates were educated in the region’s schools. Founded 25 years ago, the nationally-recognized El Paso Collaborative for Academic Excellence provides a structure for the Dean of the College to work closely with area superintendents, the leadership of the El Paso Community College, and business and community leaders to expand educational opportunities across the region and to advance research that addresses regional and national issues in education and teacher preparation—for example to build on UTEP’s recognized efforts in bilingual/ELL education, innovative dual language programs, school-based teacher preparation, STEM education and the development of dual credit and early college high schools, among other initiatives.

The Dean is a member of the University senior leadership team and provides academic and administrative leadership for the College, including three departments, five research labs and two research centers with academic programs at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels. Working collaboratively with College faculty and staff, the Dean supports efforts to further student success, develop academic and research initiatives and secure external funding. The Dean will lead the College’s involvement in the UTEP EDGE, a groundbreaking, asset-based approach to student engagement and professional preparation. The Dean leads College development initiatives and represents the College to external stakeholders and potential supporters.
