UTEP Celebrates Graduates at Sun Bowl

The University of Texas at El Paso will celebrate the accomplishments of all graduates of the Class of 2020, and spring and summer candidates from the Class of 2021, in a pair of momentous Commencement ceremonies May 14-15, 2021, at Sun Bowl Stadium.

The ceremonies — which mark the first time UTEP has hosted in-person Commencement festivities since December 2019 and the first time graduates will receive their diplomas in Sun Bowl Stadium since the University’s Centennial Commencement in 2014 — will each begin at 7 p.m. Friday, May 14, and Saturday, May 15. Doors will open at 5 p.m. each day.

Friday’s ceremony will recognize bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral graduates and candidates in the colleges of Business Administration, Education and Liberal Arts. Saturday’s ceremony will honor graduates and candidates in the colleges of Engineering, Health Sciences and Science, and the schools of Nursing and Pharmacy. All graduates will have their names read as they cross the stage and have their photo taken, but there will be no physical contact between the graduates and the stage party. Graduate and guest seating at the Sun Bowl will be assigned.

The ceremonies will be livestreamed and available to view at utep.edu.

The First Class

UTEP will award its first Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degrees to 40 students during the May 15 Commencement ceremony at Sun Bowl Stadium. In 2015, The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved the creation of UTEP’s new School of Pharmacy. The school welcomed its first cohort of students in August 2017.

The School of Pharmacy will celebrate its first class of graduates with an inaugural hooding ceremony from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 2021, in Magoffin Auditorium on the UTEP campus. The ceremony will be livestreamed for the public at www.utep.edu/pharmacy/hooding.

Doctoral Hooding Ceremony

A doctoral hooding ceremony honoring the colleges of Liberal Arts, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Science and Nursing will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, May 14, 2021, at the Don Haskins Center. The ceremony will be livestreamed for the public at www.utep.edu.

Things to Know

Graduating students who RSVP’d by the deadline are each allocated up to eight free tickets to invite guests to attend the ceremonies. Social distancing between family groups will be in place and face masks will be required. Only clear bags will be permitted and will be checked at the door. No strollers, large bags or outside food will be permitted.

Small umbrellas, diaper bags and one sealed plastic water bottle per person will be allowed. Concessions will be open. Hand-sanitizing stations will be set up, and stadium seating capacity will not exceed 50%. Shuttles will not be available. Carpooling with the graduate is recommended. A designated safe drop-off zone will be located in Miner Alley behind the Sun Bowl Parking Garage.

Guest parking is located in the perimeter lots of Sun Bowl Drive and ADA parking is located near the north and south stadium entrances. A complete list of recommended parking sites can be found here.

A fireworks display is expected to take place at the conclusion of each ceremony. Due to safety concerns, guests will be asked to remain in their seats during the fireworks display. Guests will be dismissed by section. Graduates will enter and exit through the tunnel.

‘Mining Minds’ Special Lighting

The “Mining Minds” pickaxe sculpture located at the Sun Bowl-University Roundabout will be illuminated in blue and orange from Wednesday evening, May 12, through Sunday evening, May 16, to commemorate UTEP's classes of 2020 and 2021.

“Mining Minds” is an iconic piece of public art installed in 2010 to enhance the UTEP campus. At night, orange lights brighten the steel structure while light from LEDs emanate from the perforated “ones” and “zeroes” at each end of the pick. The University illuminates the pick in blue and orange on special occasions such as historic dates, major annual milestones and celebrations of special accomplishments.

Learn more about “Mining Minds” at www.utep.edu/miningminds.

Parents Living in Mexico May Attend UTEP Commencement Ceremonies Following UTEP, CBP Agreement

The University of Texas at El Paso and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have reached an agreement that will permit members of the graduating classes of 2020 and Spring/Summer 2021 living in Mexico, and their parents to attend the University's Commencement ceremonies on Friday May 14, 2021 and Saturday May 15, 2021.

“As America’s leading Hispanic-serving university, UTEP serves students in a binational and bicultural region, and we have approximately 1,000 international students from Mexico,” said UTEP President Heather Wilson. “Commencement is a very important milestone for all of us, most importantly for our students and their families, since it represents a celebration of their collective efforts and sacrifices. We are grateful to our partners at the CBP, especially Director of Field Operations Hector Mancha, for working with us to make this happen for our students and their families.”

The University continues to work with CBP on the details of how this agreement will be implemented at our local border crossings. We will communicate that to our graduates very soon. UTEP Graduating Students Can Bring 8 Guests to Commencement

April 22

After carefully reviewing the level of COVID-19 in the community and the number of graduates participating in our in-person Commencement ceremonies, we have determined that we can safely allow graduating students to bring up to eight guests each to the ceremonies on May 14 and 15 in Sun Bowl Stadium.

We are in a much different place than last year at this time, in terms of the number of cases of COVID-19, and the number of people who have been vaccinated in our community. Our 2020 and Spring 2021 graduates have worked hard to earn their degrees, and their achievements deserve to be celebrated with their loved ones.

Social distancing between family groups will be in place and face masks will be required at the free, ticketed event. Hand sanitizing stations will be set up, and Sun Bowl seating capacity will not exceed 50%, even if every graduate brings eight guests.

All graduates will have their names called as they cross the stage and have their photo taken, but there will be no physical contact between the graduates and the stage party.

The ceremonies will also be livestreamed at www.utep.edu.

I look forward to celebrating our students’ achievements in May in the Sun Bowl!

Warm Regards,
Heather Wilson
President

UTEP Announces Details for Commencement Ceremonies in May 2021

March 24

The University of Texas at El Paso will host two in-person Commencement ceremonies at Sun Bowl Stadium in May for all graduates of the Class of 2020 and the 2021 spring and summer candidates.

The ceremonies will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, May 14, and Saturday, May 15.

“We’re looking forward to celebrating the accomplishments of our 2020 and 2021 graduates,” said UTEP President Heather Wilson. “Now that COVID-19 cases are declining in our community, and we have been able to vaccinate many of our students, faculty, staff and their family members through the UTEP vaccination program, we can safely host a meaningful in-person ceremony in the Sun Bowl.”

Each graduate will be allowed to invite at least two guests to attend the ceremonies. The number of guests per graduate may increase once the University determines the total number of graduates who will be attending and based on the public health conditions closer to the event. Graduates and candidates must RSVP to attend by April 16 in order to participate in the in-person ceremonies.

“We don’t have a good way to estimate how many graduates from 2020 will want to come back and participate in person,” President Wilson said. “It’s really important for all students to tell us whether they will be participating by April 16 so that we can plan a safe event and let as many family and friends come as we can.”

Face coverings will be required, hand-sanitizing stations will be placed throughout the stadium, and social distancing and additional safety protocols will be in place based on CDC and state guidelines for this outdoor event, as well as local health conditions at the time.

The ceremonies will also be livestreamed.

For more information about Spring 2021 Commencement, visit www.utep.edu/commencement.
