Capstone experiences are designed to bring studies to a culmination by utilizing acquired knowledge to create a design, solve a real-world problem, or perform relevant scholarly activity, which varies by the discipline of studies. The experience is comprehensive and provides a level of autonomy and decision-making that allows the student to transition from the highly-structured educational experience to the complex world of life after college. The capstone may include the completion of independent research, professional projects, corporate collaboration or other signature work to showcase career or graduate-school readiness. In addition, the Capstone Experience allows a student to reflect on the entire student experience, and it often prepare students to articulate skills and experiences relevant to their work and civic life.
Capstone experiences are a great opportunity for students to work in interdisciplinary teams by:
- Consulting and/or designing with other majors for the community
- Conducting research and publishing with other colleges
- Developing ideas that will evolve into entrepreneurial opportunities
