2019 MENTE Symposium Thoughtshop Descriptions
*Title: Be a Better You
Description: Participants will apply what they already know of themselves including their culture and memories to reevaluate what is important to them and who they are. Learn life lessons to apply to their lives today to grow, improve, succeed, be positive, and happy. Participants will complete a poem that requires personal connections and a puzzle piece that requires a positive characteristic about themselves.
*Title: Blind Field
Description: Students will be completing an obstacle course with the guidance of a partner while being blindfolded. The goal of the workshop is for students to communicate and accept help when given to them, as well as learning to trust others around them in order to overcome real-life obstacles.
*Title: Building Yourself Up
Description: Guiding children to become self-aware and build on their identity is important because it allows them to set future goals and to identify what aspects of their lives need modifications. Students will analyze the current perspective of themselves and how it influences their future decision making.
*Title: Elephant in the Room: What Colleges Look For
Description: An interactive perspective into college application requirements. Learn the different components that make up a college application and how to best meet these requirements by planning for the future now.
*Title: Path to Success: How your Resume can Help you Tomorrow
Description: Success in the workforce is vital for economic prosperity, but it’s hard to achieve this when your foot is not even in the door. For this reason, resume building is key to grab the attention of future employers. This workshop will teach young students the importance of a good resume while helping them create one as well. Students will leave this workshop with a completed template that they can expand on as they achieve more academic success and gain employment experience.
*Title: Got Distractions!?
Description: “Oh look, a squirrel!” Do you find yourself getting easily distracted? If yes, you are not alone, our children today face challenges on how to stay focused, due to all the distractions around them. Our main goal is to get our participants thinking about their future and finding a healthy balance when it comes to managing distractions. Students will be able to participate hands-on and our presentation will guide students on how to think critically and understand the importance of their future by using personal experiences. At the end of our presentation, the students will leave with an understanding of how important it is to think about their future as it relates to distractions and how to avoid squirrels.
*Title: The Superhero in Me: Discovering My Own Identity
Description: Helping students to identify characteristics of their individuality in a healthy and safe environment helps students to discover who they really are. Learn how the world perceives you, how you perceive yourself, and learn ways to mesh those two perceptions into something you are unapologetically proud of.
*Title: The Power in Me!
Description: This is a motivational workshop in order to create consciousness in children about their voice and identity. In the workshop, critical thinking about specific images is necessary to have a better understanding of themselves and their surroundings. Creating self-awareness into what they are provided and what they need as well as their meaning in life, their self-image and their images of others.
