The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recently approved a distance-learning doctoral program at The University of Texas of El Paso created to assist fellow educators and administrators at other area academic institutions with their professional development.
The program approved in early February 2019 is a collaboration between UTEP, El Paso Community College (EPCC) and the Socorro Independent School District (SISD). It provides online, face-to-face and hybrid course options to those who want to earn a doctor of education in administrative leadership.
The University sends faculty members from its Department of Educational Leadership and Foundations to the EPCC or SISD headquarters, 9050 Viscount and 12440 Rojas, respectively, to offer classes to cohorts of up to 15 students made up mostly of administrators and tenure-track teachers.
Rodolfo Rincones, Ph.D., associate professor of educational leadership and UTEP’s program liaison, said the coordinating board’s action ensures the program’s integrity.
“We’re talking curriculum, professors, student selection, advising, everything,” Rincones said. “The coordinating board wants to certify that all students in the program have access to similar resources as those who attend the same classes at UTEP.”
