Civil Engineering student receives DOE SULI award

Jorge E. Higuera-Munoz has been named this year's recipient of the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships [SULI] program. The SULI program offers paid internships for undergraduate students and recent graduates to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at different Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. SULI recipients conduct hands-on research and work with laboratory staff scientists and engineers on projects related to ongoing research programs at one of 17 participating DOE facilities and laboratories.

Higuera-Munoz, who will graduate from The University of Texas at El Paso in the Spring of 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, is working as an Environmental Engineer at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, where he will advance his area of expertise studies by collaborating with the Grid Integration Systems and Mobility team (GISMo) on enabling a grid that can provide 100% clean energy.

“I believe this experience will help me greatly in my pursuit of becoming an engineering researcher in the future. Ever since I was child, I always wondered how I could change the world, this experience will get me closer to that goal,” said Higuera-Munoz.
