UTEP’s College of Engineering’s Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering and Management Program has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) and the Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission (ANSAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental global agency accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.
ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates who are ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.
“With the international recognition that comes from ABET accreditation, the College of Engineering confirms its commitment to preparing students with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience to enter the workforce,” said Kenith E. Meissner II, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering. “Engineering students can be confident their educational experience meets the international standards set by ABET and improves their career opportunities upon graduation.”
ABET has identified UTEP’s BSCEM program strengths and educational objectives that have deemed the program worthy of accreditation. These include the degree requirement of students to participate in internships, the practical experience students can obtain and apply from the program from professors administering course content in a laboratory setting, and the course content in engineering measurement and basic land surveying which distinctively sets the program apart from others. This accreditation declares the BSCEM as one of the select few programs to be accredited by two ABET commissions out of the 4,361 programs at 850 colleges and universities in 41 countries. This accreditation is retroactive to October 01, 2019, meaning all students who have earned degrees in the program have now graduated from an ABET accredited school.
“ABET accreditation is a significant achievement for our department. It comes after a multi-year process of extensive reviews to our program curriculum, faculty profiles, facilities and institutional support. Our BSCEM is the second program of its kind to be accredited internationally by ABET,” said Carlos Ferregut, Ph.D., civil engineering chair. “I would like to extend our appreciation to UTEP leadership, faculty, students, administrators, alumni and practicing engineers who helped and supported us during this process.”
