I. DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

A. Course Number: EDPC 3517
B. Course Name: Human Growth and Development
C. A descriptive anaylsis of the typical patterns of human physical, social, emotional, moral, intellectual, cognitive, and personality growth and development from individual and systemic perspectives.

PREREQUISITE: Admission to graduatQ program or permission of the instructor.

II. SPECIFICATION OF COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

A. To become knowledgeable about the basic patterns of physical, social, moral, intellectual, and personality growth and develop- ment from the perspective of the individual and the various social systems in which the individual functions.

B. To examine various theories related to human growth and development from the perspective of individual psychology and social systems theory.

C. To introduce the student to the relavence and use of developmental processes in therapy.

III. REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS

Seifert, K., Hoffnung, R. & Hoffnung, M. (1997). LifesPan Development (Current Edition). Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co.

IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS

A. There will be two written objective examinations given:
1. one mid-term exam
2. one final exam

B. One written paper is required.
1. The paper must be 10 pages of double-spaced text, exculding title page and references.

2. The papter must cite 7 separate resources in the text of the paper. All references must be from professional resources.

3. The subject of the paper must be on a developmental theory approved by the instructor.

4. The citations and reference list must be written in the American Psychological Association (APA) 4th edition style.

C. Five professional journal article critiques
1. The article must be from the following journals:
a. Child Development
b. Child Psychiatry and Human Development
c. Early Chidhood Development and Care
d. Adolescence
e. Human Development

2. The critique must include an appropriate APA (4th Ed.) citation at the top of the page.

3. Write a concise summary of the article. (about 2/3 of a page)
4. One paragraph critiquing the article.
5. No longer than one page in length for each critique.
6. The critique must be single spaced.

D. Class attendance

1. Roll will be taken at each class meeting.
2. Any absence must be reported in writing to the instructor upon return to class.
3. Students are responsible for all work during absences.

A. Grade Scale:
A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 70-79
F = 0-69
B. Final course grade will be determined as follows:

Mid-term exam = 30%
Finalexam = 30%
Journal Critiques = 20%
Paper = 20%
