Major and Career Resources
It’s important that students select a major and desired career based on their own interests, values, and abilities. If your student is undecided or struggling with what major and career interest to pursue, you can direct your student to the numerous resources UTEP has available to assist students.
The University Career Center and office provide a wealth of career-related information, including a Career Center Planning Guide that includes “A College Timeline: How to Plan for Career Success.” The website also provides a section entitled “Career Planning Resources” that includes a link to Choices360, an online career exploration program designed to help students identify major and career options. Also in the “Career Planning Resources” section is a link to “What Can I Do with This Major?,” a program that allows students to examine various occupations linked to specific majors.
University personnel such as academic advisors, career counselors/advisors, and professors are also good resources for discussing major and career interests. Encourage your student to talk with a UTEP professional about possible areas of interest.
Since students’ first 2-3 semesters consist largely of core curriculum courses that aren’t tied to a specific major, students have time to investigate majors and careers. Encourage your student to use UTEP’s resources to help him or her make an informed decision.
