GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: HADYA GONZALEZ
Hadya Gonzalez was born and raised in El Paso. She has a rooted curiosity regarding human behavior and a strong desire to help others in meaningful ways. During Hadya's time as an undergraduate student at UTEP, she developed a deep interest in how the brain works and functions, particularly in areas like lifespan development, how early experiences shape future functioning, and mental health disorders. Hadya plans to graduate in May 2027.
"I’ve found that I actually prefer online learning because it gives me the opportunity to manage my time more efficiently and decreases the need for long commutes. My experience with online learning has been effective and meaningful due to the constant support I have from my professors; it also allows me to still have a balanced and enjoyable life outside of my studies."
FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: DR. JASON MALLONEE
Jason Mallonee is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Social Work at The University of Texas at El Paso and also serves as the coordinator for the online Master of Social Work (MSW) program. He spearheaded the process of launching the online MSW program at UTEP in 2023 in collaboration with UTEP Online. The online program currently serves 52 students and is thriving. "UTEP Online has been such a great partner to work with, and we couldn’t have achieved this without their continued guidance and support," he says. As a clinician and as a professor, Dr. Mallonee specializes in mental and behavioral health treatment, particularly trauma treatment, and serves on the Steering Committee for the National Initiative for Trauma Education and Workforce Development.
"My advice to online students is to build relationships with your faculty, other students and social work leaders in your community. Ensure you have the time to devote to the intensive study and requirements of the program, and to be proactive in supporting your own educational growth and achieving your goals."
