Connect with Us!
Summer 2018Connect with Us! is a quarterly newsletter that features a UTEP Connect online program and the faculty, staff and students associated with it. Featured Program: Online M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction with a Concentration in Early Childhood Education
This 36-credit, non-thesis, fully online degree is perfect for working teachers with busy schedules. Graduates of this program will be able to make a huge difference in the lives of young children by giving them a solid educational foundation and enabling them to engage actively with their education for the years to come.
Our newest student success initiative, the UTEP Edge, develops upon our students’ assets through a variety of high-impact experiences. These experiences are designed to improve student skills and give UTEP students a competitive advantage as they move forward in their lives and careers. Our goal as a campus is to provide these UTEP Edge experiences to all of our students, regardless of their area of study, so they will graduate with a competitive advantage over their peers.

Andrew Nebl, Student, Online M.Ed in Curriculum & Instruction/Concentration in Early Childhood Education
""I have been a flight instructor for a dozen or so years, and I really enjoy teaching and having an impact on people's growth...I believe the school teacher occupation will suit my personal and professional goals as my next career."
Andrew Nebl is an active duty helicopter pilot and flight instructor in the Army and Coast Guard who plans to become a teacher in his second career. Thanks to online learning, Andy's been able to get his degree while also juggling work and family life; he looks forward to making an immediate impact as a teacher after graduation. As a non-teacher who is employed full-time, Andy has faced some special challenges without easy access to a classroom, but he's made the experience work for him. Andy is currently completing his fifth class at UTEP and plans to graduate in December 2018. "I couldn’t complete this degree any other way but online...I am away from home for long periods now and the online format allows me to budget my time accordingly."
In Fall 2017, Alyse C. Hachey arrived "to the sunny mountains of El Paso from the concrete jungle of New York City.” Her first job at UTEP was to completely revamp the M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction/Concentration in Early Childhood Education. In New York, she was a professor of Psychology and Early Childhood Education at the City University of New York (CUNY) for 12 years and also served in various leadership roles, specifically regarding program and curriculum development. Herself the
mother of twin three-year old sons, she is passionate about working with young children and is driven by their sense of wonder -- something she brings into the classroom.
" I am constantly reminded of how amazing young children are (they are not only wonderful… but wonder-filled!)....If I have one piece of advice to give my online students, I guess it is to never forget the real focus…those wonder-filled children."
"Successful online students are aware of their potential for learning and build on that by doing more than showing up – by showing their online classmates and their professor what they know by contributing in a high-quality manner, by being mindful and thoughtful in the work they produce." - Reynaldo Reyes, Ph.D. | Associate Professor, College of Education
