The CIRTL @ UTEP Learning Community is open to all UTEP graduate students and postdoctoral fellows through a free, self-paced, self-enrolling process.
Participants are expected to complete the CIRTL requirements through a series of activities. See below to get more details about the requirements.

CIRTL @ UTEP ASSOCIATE:
A UTEP Associate values improving his or her students' learning through effective, evidence-based teaching and can recognize and describe the value of the CIRTL core ideas for achieving this goal in diverse learning environments. Associates are equipped with the fundamental knowledge of research-based teaching practices and are ready to apply this knowledge in their teaching contexts.
A CIRTL @ UTEP Associate can:
- Identify realistic, well-defined, and achievable learning goals.
- Explain how to design effective and inclusive instructional materials and learning environments ensuring alignment between learning goals, assessments, and activities.
- Identify relevant teaching, learning, and assessment literature.
- Describe the impact of learning communities on student learning.
- Recognize the diversity in one’s classroom and the need to address that diversity in one’s teaching practices.

CIRTL @ UTEP PRACTITIONER:
A UTEP Practitioner has gained in-depth understanding of the full-inquiry cycle of Teaching-as-Research by engaging in a TAR project, into which is woven the core ideas of learning communities and learning-through-diversity. Practitioners are familiar with the dynamic process of scholarly teaching and interact with peers and mentors to improve their TAR outcomes. They are ready to contribute knowledge about teaching and learning to the community.
A CIRTL @ UTEP Practitioner can:
- Review and critique literature on teaching, learning, and assessment.
- Design and implement a Teaching-as-Research (TAR) project.
- Demonstrate how disciplinary research informs one's own teaching.
- Develop learning communities with students and peers.
- Design and implement teaching plans that leverage diversity to ensure success for all learners.

CIRTL @ UTEP SCHOLAR:
A UTEP Scholar has demonstrated progress from scholarly teaching to the scholarship of teaching and learning by adding to and advancing the community's knowledge of teaching and learning. Scholars have presented and/or published the results of their TAR efforts to local, regional, national, or international peer audiences.
A CIRTL @ UTEP Scholar can:
- Present or publish a successfully completed TAR project.
- Demonstrate for peers expertise in disciplinary teaching practices by presenting.
