The Grad Student Perspective
The Graduate School recognizes the value of mentoring in graduate education and recommends that graduate students actively seek mentoring relationships with faculty members. Different mentors may provide different types of assistance, so we recommend students have multiple faculty members (as well as professionals outside the academy) to whom they can look for advice and guidance. Mentors should introduce students and postdocs to other people in their field, teach norms and best practices of their discipline, and work with them to create an Individual Development Plan. The Graduate Advantage page has more information about creating such a plan.
The links below provide information and resources on a number of topics related to the mentoring. Importantly, The UTEP Center for Faculty Leadership and Development facilitates professional development activities related to mentoring, so check their schedule often. The National Postdoctoral Association provides a Toolkit on Mentoring, which includes articles, mentoring plan templates, and other resources for protégés and their mentors. UTEP is partnering with MentorNet to provide UTEP students with access to one-to-one, guided virtual mentoring designed to support advancement in STEM fields and equipped to meet the needs of UTEP students. Graduate students can click here to register and be matched with mentors who are UTEP alumni.
