Important notice
For inactive members, we understand that you may have had your GPA drop below 3.5, forgotten to submit your form by deadline, or had some other event occur that has resulted in your becoming inactive. In order to reduce confusion and ensure that the Honors program is beneficial to you, we will allow you reapply to the Honors program only once. Hopefully, this will encourage you to think strategically and provide you with another opportunity to apply if you have become inactive.

Graduation Requirements and Designation
The University Honors Degree includes transcript designation, the Honors Degree is noted in the commencement book, and the student receives a gold stole and UHP Pin.
Students interested in pursuing an honors degree must sucessfully complete these requirements in order to graduate with an honors degree.
- Member Agreement will be signed and submitted to UHP only once and upon entry to the program
- Maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA
- It is mandatory to attend at least one (1) UHP Group Event each fall and spring semester
- Student are responsible for submitting Graduation Clearance Form to the UHP Office by the deadline given on the form
- Complete the requirements of the college curriculum

College of Business Administration Honors Program
Graduation requirements
- Complete two of the following:
- Active participation in a COBA Corporate Academy for one year
- Research and Scholarly Activity for at least one semester
- COBA-approved Study Abroad/Study Away
- Co-curricular programs such as a COBA-approved career-related certification, professional conference, or case competition
- Participation in academic honors society for at least one year
2. Complete two of the following:
- Internship related to student’s major and/or career plans
- Student Leadership (Serve as an officer for at least one academic year in a COBA student organization or student government association)
- Professional Development Program (participate in a semester-long professional development program such as the Employer-led Professional Development Institute)
- Community Engagement (participation in COBA-approved community engagement activities registered via THE CUE platform)
- Mentorship program (participation in one of COBA’s mentorship programs for at least one semester)
College of Education Honors Program
Graduation requirements
Complete four (4) of the following high impact practices (two (2) in category A and two (2) in category B), at least one per academic year to remain an active member of the UHP. The student will have to provide proof of satisfactory completion** and attendance of the activities.
1. Complete two (2) of the following:
- COED approved Study Abroad/Study Away
- Community Engagement activities approved by the COED (i.e., Project Move, community engagement organized by student organizations)
- On-Campus Student Employment
- Research and Scholarly Activity
- Internship (residency) related to student's major and/or career plans
- Student Leadership (serve as an officer for at least one academic year in a COED student organization or student government association).
- Creative Activities (special projects/artifacts created as part of a course)
- Professional Preparation (volunteering, subbing (substitute teacher), Science Fair judge, field-based experiences, etc. relevant to student's major and/or career plans; 40 hours minimum)
- Professional Development participation approved by COED (workshops, webinars related students’ major and/or career plans such as building resume, P3 opportunities, interviewing skills, professionalism, etc.)
** Submit reflection essay that describe how the completed high-impact practices enhance your personal/professional growth and leadership skills.
College of Engineering Honors Program
Graduation requirements
- Minimum of four (4) high-impact practices must be completed by the deadline in order to graduate with Honors recognition.
- Once the student starts a High Impact Practice, submitting a High Impact Practice Notice form is required
- Once the practice is completed, a High Impact Practice Completion form is required to receive credit
- Previous practices can count towards completing the credit requirement, as long as the student submits a Completion Form as proof. Required GPA must be maintained during and at the time of completion
- HIP practices allowed
Capstone Experiences - Allowed once during college. Approved as high-impact practice if the activity is not part of a degree plan.
Community Engagement - Allowed once during college. In order to receive honors credit for community engagement students must participate in at least 40 hours on the community service involvement website THE CUE. Students must register each service provided on this platform in order to receive credit
Creative Activities - Allowed multiple times during college. This activity is upon approval and it has to have a significant contribution to the student competition
Internships - Allowed multiple times during college. In order to receive credit for an internship, the student must register the activity in job mine unless it is a formal internal course and must be completed within the academic or pre-professional field
Professional Preparation - Allowed multiple times during college. In order to receive honors credit for Professional Preparation students must complete at least 40 hours of shadowing professionals in their field. Passing the fundamental engineering exam can be counted as Professional Preparation
Research and Scholarly Activities - Allowed multiple times during college. In order to receive honors credit for research students must register for RSRC 4033 & obtain a grade of S
Student Leadership - Allowed once during college. In order to receive honors credit for student leadership, the student must be involved in a UTEP registered organization holding an officer position and be there for at least 1 year
Study Abroad/Away - Allowed twice maximum during college
NOTE: Student Employment does not count as high impact activity
- The exception to this is employment as a Research Assistant or as a Teaching Assistant and it is allowed once during college
College of Health Science Honors Program
Graduation requirements
Completion of four (4) of the following high-impact activities, at least once per year to remain an active member of the UHP. In addition to the above, each of these activities is required to be approved by the honors program to ensure it is aligned with the College of Health Sciences mission and core values (repetitions of some criteria are allowed – see below). The student will have to provide proof of satisfactory completion of all high-impact activities and attendance of the activities before graduation.
- Research and Scholarly Activity: must complete two semesters of RSRC 4033 in College of Health Science (no substitutions, repetition is encouraged)***
- Creative Activities (first author presentation in a scientific conference or exhibition presentation, co-authoring publications)***
- Capstone Experiences relevant to major*
- Community Engagement activities approved by the department (The CUE)*
- Internship related to student’s major and/or career plans***
- On-Campus Student Employment**
- Professional Preparation (volunteering, shadowing, etc. relevant to student’s major and/or career plans; 40 hours minimum)***

College of Liberal Arts Honors Program
Graduation requirements
Complete requirements. The student will have to provide proof of satisfactory completion and attendance of the activities. Be sure to visit the LAHP Admission Requirements, as well as What to do When You're Admitted, and Graduating with LAHP Honors for more information on how the LAHP Minor works. You can apply to the LAHP when you have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours, with at least 12 of those hours at UTEP
To complete the LAHP minor a student must fulfill the following requirements:
- Two LAHP theory/methodology courses (6 Credit Hours)
- Three additional courses, or two for Psychology students, that can be chosen from a list of over100 Honors-Designated Courses, Internships taken for course credit, Study Abroad courses (up to six hours), or courses taken with UTEP professors outside of El Paso. We also partner with the Law School Preparation Institute (LSPI) and accept up to six hours of their courses.
- One Zero credit cross-disciplinary Honors Seminartaken in the student's last semester (0 Credit Hours)
- One Honors Project/Thesisto be completed in an independent study course within the student's home department (3 Credit Hours)
College of Science Honors Program
Graduation requirements
Complete at least four (4) of the following High Impact activities described below, at least one (1) each year. Each High Impact activity is required to be approved to ensure it is aligned with the College of Science Honors Program’s mission and core values, that is the activity is significant and impactful and goes above and beyond curricular requirements
- Students must submit Notices of Intent (available on the UHP website) to the Manager of the Science Honors Program before beginning an experience, and provide completion documentation (available at the website) at the close of each experience chosen.
- Any such experience must occur during membership in the Honors Program to count to the Honors degree.
- An exception for Study Abroad completed prior to entering the Honors Program is allowed if completed as a UTEP student with the minimum GPA requirement.
- Double-dipping of 1 activity to count as 2 is not allowed. Where appropriate, an experience may lead to an additional High Impact experience (ex: research engagement leading to the presentation of research at a gathering of scientists can count as 2 activities, Research & Capstone)
- Research and Scholarly Activity: Documented involvement in a research lab as a volunteer or paid assistant or engagement in a scholarly activity outside the scope of degree requirements with mentoring by a faculty member (NOTE: FYRIS labs, Special Problems, and Independent Research courses do NOT count as Honors Research & Scholarly Activity). Student must be registered to RSRC 4033 and obtain a grade of S in order to receive credit
- Capstone Experience:Exploring or researching a science or math topic of interest under the guidance of faculty where the final product is a research paper presentation or research poster presentation; if required to complete the student’s degree, the capstone will NOT count as Honors credit
- Community Engagement:At least 40 hours devoted to community service at a single community location or non-profit organization, or in a single community initiative or mission; collections of brief service episodes at multiple locations will NOT qualify as Honors engagement. In order to receive credit student must participate through the community service involvement website THE CUE. It is mandatory to register services provided on THE CUE platform in order to receive credit
- Internships: Completing an internship in your academic or pre-professional field. Student must register activity in job mine unless is a formal internal course
- Study Abroad/Study Away:Participating in a study abroad experience or faculty-led international study activity while a UTEP student with at least a 3.5 GPA
- Student Leadership:Holding a leadership position in a student organization, involvement in student government, student employment positions that include leadership responsibilities, or organizing and executing a service project or similar initiative. Student must be involved in a UTEP-registered organization for at least one (1) year in order to receive credit
- Shadowing a Medical Professional or other Science-Based Professional:At least 40 hours shadowing a medical professional or other science-based professional related to the student’s professional path. Different activities cannot be combined to meet the minimum required
Student Employment: Employment at UTEP as tutors, peer leaders, office staff, event planning, graphic design, technology staff, library personnel, teaching assistants, or research assistants. Employment must be on-campus and work in the same place for at least one (1) year in order to receive credit
College of Nursing Honors Program
Graduation Requirements
The students must be involved in a High Impact Practice. Practices can be completed at the student’s pace with a minimum of one per year. Students must meet the terms of the contract to successfully receive honors credit.
- Minimum of four (4) high-impact practices must be completed by the deadline in order to graduate with Honors recognition.
- Once the student starts a High Impact Practice, submitting a High Impact Practice Notice form is required
- Once the practice is completed, a High Impact Practice Completion form is required to receive credit
- Previous practices can count towards completing the credit requirement, as long as the student submits a Completion Form as proof. Required GPA must be maintained during and at the time of completion
Student Leadership – Allowed once during college. To receive credit for this activity student requires the following: In Phase 1 students must be involved in the Student Government Association. In Phase 2 and Phase 3, the student must be a member of the TNSA and must maintain membership throughout the program; an officer position is preferred.
Professional Preparation - Allowed multiple times during college.
Option 1
To receive credit for this activity student requires the following: Phase 1 Students must complete 5 activities from the career center. When the student enters Phase 2 must complete 2 career center activities. These activities should be meaningful in the professional preparation development.
Option 2
The student can do shadowing a professional in order to receive credit the student must complete at least 20 hours within the same activity in their field; different activities cannot be combined to meet the minimum required.
Community Engagement - Allowed once during college. This activity can only be completed in Phase 3 and the student must complete 40 volunteer hours as a member of the Texas Nurses Association (TNSA).
Capstone Experience – Allowed once during college and can only be completed in Phase 4
Internship – Allowed multiple times during college and can only be completed in Phase 4. In order to receive credit for an internship, the student must register the activity in job mine unless it is a formal internship within a clinical practicum and must be completed within the academic or pre-professional field
Student Employment – Allowed twice maximum during college. The student should not be employed with the College of Nursing, as would be considered a conflict of interest. In order to receive credit for student employment, it must be on-campus and work in the same place for at least 1 year
Research and Scholarly Activities – Allowed multiple times during college. In order to receive credit for research, student must be registered to RSRC 4033 & obtain a grade of S
Creative Activities – Allowed multiple times during college
Study Abroad/Away - Allowed twice maximum during college
