PRE-HONORS APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS. BEFORE APPLYING TO THE SCIENCE HONORS PROGRAM, THE STUDENT MUST COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS
Eligibility to apply
- Student must be classified as
- Freshman
- Student is required a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5
IF REQUIREMENTS ARE FULLFILLED, STUDENT MUST SUBMIT APPLICATION
A successful Honors Program Application will consist in a single PDF file, submitted at uhpnetwork@utep.edu
TO COMPLETE THE PRE-HONORS PROGRAM FOR SCIENCE, STUDENT MUST FULLFILL THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS
- Maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA
- Complete one (1) of the following events, at least one per year to remain an active member of the UHP. Student will to have to provide proof of completion and attend workshops.
- Capstone Experiences
- Community Engagement
- Creative Activities
- Internship
- On-Campus Student Employment
- Professional Preparation
- Student Leadership
- Study Abroad/Study Away
- Research and Scholarly Activity
- Students must be a part of the Honors community at UTEP. Mandatory attendance at events will be announced during the academic school year
- Students must submit annual acknowledgement and other required forms to remain an active member

BEFORE APPLYING TO THE SCIENCE HONORS PROGRAM, THE STUDENT MUST COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS
Requirements for Probationary Admission:
- Sophomore, Junior or Senior Standing (at least two years-four semesters- reminding to graduate)
- Overall GPA of at least 3.5
- Majors GPA of at least 3.5
Note: Transfer students will need to provide transcripts from their previous school

This is a program where academically superior students learn leadership skills and receive mentoring to medical and non-medical graduate programs

TO COMPLETE THE SCIENCE HONORS PROGRAM, STUDENT MUST FULFILL THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the above, you must complete two semesters of RSRC 4033 in the College of Science and complete two of the following events. Student will have to provide proof of completion and meet with the director at least once in the fall and once in the spring.
- Capstone Experience: A capstone experience involves exploring or researching a science or math topic of interest under the guidance of an instructor where the final product is a research paper presentation or research project presentation
- Community Engagement: At least 25 hours of volunteering and/or community service. Student must meet with the director of the College of Science Honors Program for approval prior to the event
- Internships: Completing at least one internship in your academic field
- Study Abroad/Study Away: Participating for at least one semester where science courses taken must be credited toward your degree
- Student Leadership: This is defined as holding a leadership position in a student organization, involvement in student government, student employment positions that include leadership responsibilities, organizing a service project, or engaging in a research project
- Shadowing Doctors: At least 25 hours shadowing doctors. Student must meet with Dr. Gail Arnold, director of the Pre-Health Medical Professions Institute, to create the contract prior to the event
- Student Employment: Students employed by UTEP as tutors, peer leaders, office staff, event planning, graphic design, technology staff, library personnel, teaching assistants, or research assistants
