In reviewing what the chapter says works best, students need to be provided with a set of tools that allows them to have self-directed learning, and also allows the instructor to serve as a facilitator guiding students through discussions and the course. Also, I think being able to take charge of your own learning is the most important aspect to your success in learning from a distance. Many times universities set up on-line forums, but without a students sense of responsibility to search out answers on their own, many become unmotivated and do not complete courses. In terms of resources and information, all students need equal access to resources required for the course, and designers need to task into consideration the many types of computer systems and browsers students may be using in order to guarantee equitable access for all. The chapter also lists the instructors competency with technology, group projects to foster communication among the group, and a help and support form as helping to create an effective online course.
