Project Description:

This project consists of implementing a Local Area Network (LAN) at a welfare-to-work site that is designed to deliver computer-based curriculum to clients that are in need of attaining their GED, improve their English skills, and or attain a passing grade on a state-issued licensed exam, i.e. nurse's aide exam. The project would include setting up a network of fifty computers and installing a Local Area Network on site using Windows NT 2000 at a single location. All computers will be networked and have Internet access for clients to use. All the computers will run on Windows Millennium and have curriculum-based software (i.e. Rosetta Stone, US Basics) loaded on the hard drive and networked to the LAN. All computers will be Pentium III's, 800 Mhz, have a 30G hard drive, 10/100 Ethernet Cards and 128M of RAM, sound card and headphones. A T1 line will be installed for the network to have Internet services and on-line upgrading capabilities. The project would also include an additional curriculum related to job-readiness skills that would not be computer-based.

Population Group:

The population to be served is adults for ages 17 and up that need to improve their English language skill and or need to have a specific grade level attainment, GED and or pass a state-issued exam to get a job. All clients will be referred by the local workforce development agency. The targeted population will be located in Brownsville, Texas.

Content Area:

The content areas to be addressed are based on the client's English language ability, grade level attainment, and GED attainment and or pass a state issued exam. Specific content will include oral language development, grammar development, math, algebra, geometry, reading, writing, science, and history and job-readiness skills. All clients will utilize the network services for the content areas except for the job-readiness curriculum.
