Mosquito antennae

Antennae are covered with whorls of hairs. Each antenna is composed of 15 segments. The first is inconspicuous and is usually disregarded. The second segment is a cup-like receptacle for the next. A whorl of hairs is located at the base of each of the last 13 segments. In one genus, the antennae are much longer than the proboscis. In the others, they are about the same length or shorter than the proboscis.
