Stolle

NM: Roosevelt Co.

rule

Location of the Stolle siteAge. Late Wisconsin.

General Description. The site is about 17 mi south of Portales and 5 mi north of Dora. It apparently was a small pond, with indications that a young mammoth walked into it from a sandbar and became mired (Agogino and Sweetland 1985).

Discussion. Agogino and Sweetland (1985) considered this a probable Clovis kill site, with the animal either driven into the pond or found already trapped. They interpret the site as indicating caliche rocks were used to penetrate the brain cavity and that the tusks were taken.

Fauna.

Mammuthus columbi—Columbian Mammoth (Morgan and Lucas 2005)

Literature. Agogino and Sweetland 1985; Morgan and Lucas 2005.
