Readings: AES (Automated Export System) is the central point through which export shipment data required by multiple agencies is filed electronically to Customs, using the efficiencies of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). AES alleviates the hassles that can hinder quick and efficient exporting because it eliminates the difficulties (such as inaccurate information, filling out paper forms, duplicate reporting) that impede the exporting business. AES collects information electronically and accurately, where any errors are corrected up front. *Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) and Enterprise Information Systems Architecture (EISA) http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/about/19980903.htm (page 9-10 Integrity and Automation) ACE (Automated Commercial Environment) provides the automation support necessary for Customs to implement the trade compliance redesign. This redesign emerged from the business process re-engineering efforts that customs initiated in 1994. Working with the trade community and other government agencies, Customs spent more than three years conducting a top-to-bottom review and redesign of import processes and laying out the requirements for a new computer system. ACE will support the goals of the redesigned trade compliance process — increasing compliance with laws and regulations governing imports, decreasing costs of complying with these laws, streamlining import-related processes, and improving customer service. The current commercial system is 15 years old and must be modernized. ACE is the solution. EISA (Enterprise Information System Architecture) customs wants to develop a comprehensive enterprise architecture to ensure that its IT investments support business needs and are well integrated and compatible to ensure that they provide the most bangs for the buck.
