ESOL
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Welcome!
The ESOL Program at UTEP helps students become active participants in the academic experience and university life by helping them improve their English language and academic skills.
Our students are mainly Spanish-speaking students from Mexico, although a few students from other countries are also enrolled in the program. Since its inception ESOL has grown rapidly. Today, approximately 500 students enroll in ESOL classes each semester.
Inglés como Segundo Idioma (ESOL)
Bienvenidos!
Mission and Objectives
In the ESOL program, we are committed to fostering a learning environment where students can improve their English language skills in order to become active participants of the university community. We strive to provide English language instruction that enhances the academic and communicative competence of our students and that promotes cultural respect and understanding.
The ESOL program has two major objectives:
- To offer English language courses that reflect current advances in second language teaching and learning and that take students' needs and socio-cultural background into consideration.
- To help non-English speaking students acquire the English language skills necessary to succeed in university courses and their academic life at UTEP.
The program focuses on enhancing students' grammatical knowledge as well as their reading and writing skills in English. In addition, students learn academic and research conventions that are relevant to college-level work.

Note 1: ESOL 1311 and ESOL 1312 are credit-bearing courses with credits that count toward graduation, as they are equivalent to RWS 1301 and RWS 1302 (required first-year composition courses at UTEP).
Note 2: All ESOL courses must be passed with a “C” or better before enrolling in the next course. Students who receive a D or F must retake the course and pass with a C or better before enrolling in the next level.
Further information about each of the ESOL courses can be found in the UTEP Academic Catalog.
Non-Course-Based for Non-Native Speakers (NCBL) is a free, intensive, seven-week Developmental English workshop. The goal of NCBL is to improve students’ writing, reading, and critical thinking skills through academic tasks and assignments based on readings and videos focusing on various themes and topics. ESOL 1311 is a mandatory co-requisite for the NCBL workshop. Information about the NCBL workshop can be found in the UTEP Academic Catalog.
