Mission and Objectives
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
In the ESOL program, we are committed to fostering a learning environment where students can improve their English language skills in order to become active participants of the university community. We strive to provide English language instruction that enhances the academic and communicative competence of our students and that promotes cultural respect and understanding.
The ESOL program has two major objectives:
- To offer English language courses that reflect current advances in second language teaching and learning and that take students' needs and socio-cultural background into consideration.
- To help non-English speaking students acquire the English language skills necessary to succeed in university courses and their academic life at UTEP.
The program focuses on enhancing students' grammatical knowledge as well as their reading and writing skills in English. In addition, students learn academic and research conventions that are relevant to college-level work.
