Dr. Hurley is program director of the
literacy education program. Her research and teaching interests focus on the social
and cultural factors that influence literacy-biliteracy acquisition and development.
She is formerly a third grade teacher and librarian at Chaparral Elementary
School, Gadsden ISD, New Mexico.
Dr. Hurley is the author of numerous articles and book
chapters on literacy, language, and literature. She has published in journals like
The Reading Teacher, Psychology of Reading, and Journal of Children's
Literature. Recent book chapters include "Exemplary Schooling for
Intermediate and Middle School Students Acquiring English" co-authored
with Dr. Josie Tinajero in Promoting Literacy in Grades 4-9: A
Handbook for Teachers and Administrators and "Literacy and Science:
Connections for English Language Learners" co-authored with Drs. Sally
Blake and Josie Tinajero in The Power of Two Languages 2000. The book,
Literacy Assessment of Second Language Learners, co-edited with Dr.
Tinajero is due to be released in 2001.

Dr. Liguori is formerly a bilingual and monolingual teacher with the El Paso District.
She has extensive experience working with teacher education interns in the schools of Las Cruces and the Gadsden District.
Her research areas include literacy assessment, reading practices in Spanish for native speakers, and research in Hispanic
children's literature. Dr. Liguori's areas of interest include literacy instruction for culturally diverse, ESL students,
and family literacy. She has presented numerous workshops in English and in Spanish promoting literacy including the use of
poetry, music, and children's literature to enhance student learning.

Rosaisela Rodriguez,

Areas of Research Interest:
Language diversity and literacy development;
first and second language acquisition, composition and instruction; teacher
education. Mentoring graduates and
undergraduates in their literacy endeavors, and discovering how students develop
from beginning teachers to academic professionals.
And, a growing interest in the areas of technology as it supports
literacy instruction
