UTEP’s chapter of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars has been recognized as a Certified Gold Star Chapter for the 2017-2018 academic year. The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) is a national honors organization of freshmen and sophomore students who have a minimum 3.4 GPA.

NSCS provides many services including career, leadership and graduate school connections. The organization - whose three pillars are scholarship, leadership and service - also offers more than $1 million annually in scholarships, awards and chapter funds.

There are 320 NSCS chapters in the United States. UTEP is one of only 52 Gold Star Chapters.

The Gold Star Chapter certification recognizes the work the UTEP chapter has put into developing its program and its commitment to the ideals of NSCS.

Richard Gutierrez, a lecturer in the political science department, is the chapter adviser.

“This says a lot about how hard the students are working,” Gutierrez said. “They have been very active on campus and in the community, which a lot of honor societies do not do. They are doing a great job.”

The UTEP chapter meets five to six times each academic year and is involved in a number of community service projects throughout the year. Membership provides students with many opportunities to enrich their academic career and to serve their University and community.
