At the convention, the College Media Association (CMA) announced its Pinnacle Awards recipients. UTEP received three Pinnacle Awards for The Prospector, which included first place for Best Viral Video (“Hugs Not Walls”); Honorable Mention for Best Front Page (“The Great Wall of Trump”); and Honorable Mention for Best Weekly Newspaper.

CMA’s Pinnacle Awards honor the best college media organizations and individual work. The contest is open to student work produced for any national college media organization, including print, broadcast and online outlets, during an academic year.

In addition to the CMA Pinnacle Awards, Prospector student staff members won three Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) Pacemaker awards during the convention. Jacob De La Rosa earned Honorable Mention for Best Ad Campaign; Michaela Roman and Gabriela Velasquez won 5th place in Multimedia Story of the Year for Photo Slideshow (“Members of the Union Plaza neighborhood refuse to leave home”); and Gabriela Velasquez earned Honorable Mention in Photo Excellence.

Pacemaker Award nominees are judged by teams of professionals based on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership, design, photography and graphics.
