UTEP offers a major and a minor in French. Students may also choose to double major, combining their French studies with another field of study. Coursework focuses on the French language and the literature and cultures of France and the wider French-speaking world. Students are highly encouraged to study abroad with financial aid available to well-qualified candidates.

Alphonso Nahuat was interested in French culture and meeting international students. UTEP faculty encouraged him to study abroad in France. He did, and as a result became part of a teaching assistant program organized by the French government. Today, Nahuat is a French lecturer at UTEP and plans to develop language-teaching materials.
Career choices of recent graduates include teaching at the secondary level, translation and interpretation, and work with the U.S. government abroad. Several graduates have participated in the teaching assistant program in France or worked with the Peace Corps. Other typical areas of work for French majors include law, journalism and the arts.
