Virginia M. Fraire
Virginia M. Fraire serves as associate provost at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). She joined UTEP July 2019 and brings more than 20 years of professional experience in public higher education. As associate provost, she collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to strengthen the entering student experience. Dr. Fraire serves as UTEP’s academic liaison to El Paso Community College to create seamless pathways for transfer
Prior to joining UTEP, Dr. Fraire served in multiple leadership capacities at Austin Community College (ACC) District, most recently as vice president of student affairs. At the college, she led more than 30 student and academic support units across 11 campuses to improve student access and graduation. She is the architect of ACC’s nationally recognized advising program where she worked with student and academic affairs to establish a more holistic and integrated advising approach. Through her leadership, the college established robust transfer services and pathways working with multiple colleges and universities. She is also credited with standing up the first-ever analytics unit within student affairs to support student and academic affairs in monitoring student progress and improve student retention.
Dr. Fraire’s commitment to serving a 21st century student demographic is evident in her establishment of holistic student advising approaches to address students’ unique needs such as developing a more integrated and transparent emergency aid program, creating a money management office, drop-in child care, and expanding services to support students experiencing home and food insecurity. A native of El Paso, Dr. Fraire completed her formal higher education at The University of Texas at Austin to include a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work, and a doctoral degree in higher education leadership.
Dr. Fraire and her husband, Jacob Fraire, are parents to five children: Gabriela, Alicia, Alejandra, Xavier, and Vicente.
