 Training requirements

All students, staff, and faculty need to comply with various training elements before participating in any animal research activities at UTEP. Training requirements must be completed prior to being used on any protocol or be given access to the animal facilities. 

Specialty courses will be assigned on an as-needed basis. Please contact the IACUC office for more information. 

  1. Animal Ethics and IACUC Overview
  2. Basics for Field Studies
  3. Didactic Surgical Course
  4. Handling and Biotechnology workshop
  5. Surgical Certification Practicum

Required

CITI modules, General Lab Safety (GLS), Vivarium Orientation (VO) need to be taken only once

Occupational Health Program (OHP) Enrollment and Biosafety & Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) need to be renewed annually

1. General Laboratory Safety (GLS) course, complete the online course using SciSchield

  • Log in to utep.scishield.com with your UTEP credentials. (If no UTEP credentials, contact the EH&S office for assistance)
  • Once logged in click on " training" tab and then " course Directory"
  • Select the " Laboratory Safety for Academic Lab Courses (Online)" course
  • Send us the certificate to update your training
2. Bloodborne Pathogens and Biosafety (BBP) course, complete the online course using SciShield
  • Log in to utep.scishield.com with your UTEP credentials.
  • Once logged in click on " training" tab then " course Directory"
  • Select the " Biosafety and Bloodborne Pathogens (Online)" course
  • Send us the certificate to update your training

3. Occupational Health Program. Enrollment is mandatory; participation is voluntary

vivarum orientation

The Vivarium Orientation is a five-hour class that covers the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), protection devices and measures, vivarium access privileges, facility function and flow, and tour of our vivarium. 

    1. Go to Mine Tracker and log in with UTEP credentials
    2. Use the search bar and type "Vivarium Orientation"
    3. Click on "All Events"
    4. Click on next available training
    5. To register for an event, click on "Continue to RSVP"
    6. Select "I will be attending"
    7. Answer RSVP questions
    8. You should receive an automatic email once you register
    9. If you are not able to register, please contact iacuc@utep.edu

*Make sure you have previously completed the above training requirements (CITI, GLS, OHP, BBP) before registering for the Vivarium Orientation course. If you have not completed all other training requirements, you will not be allowed to enter the class.

Request a vivarium access form by contacting the IACUC office. Individuals must have training completed and be added to an approved animal protocol prior to requesting access. 

NO individual may enter any animal facility using the access authorization of someone else.

Vivarium Access Checklist

HAVE YOU: 

  1. Completed ALL CITI modules online
  2. Complied with Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) courses
  3. Attended a Vivarium Orientation class
  4. Been added to an approved animal use protocol

Visitors entering the animal facilities must:

  1. Contact the LARC Office
  2. Sign a Liability Form acknowledging the risks of entering the vivarium as presented by the AV/AFM
