a.chieve.ment, n. something accomplished, esp. by special effort, great valor, etc.

Such academic milestones as class standing and test scores traditionally measure student success, but other factors should be taken into consideration. Involvement in school and community activities, motivation and determination, developing social, career and coping skills are just a few of the items that may be used to define success in school as well as in life.

Student achievement might be exemplified by:

  • Students who are the first in their family to graduate from college.
  • Students who through their involvement in organizations, clubs or intramural sports teams learn the value of teamwork and leadership, which can easily be transferred into their life after college.
  • Students who, through the college experience, discover a passion that leads to a fulfilling career.
  • Students who persevere through family, financial or health issues and finally graduate no matter how long it takes.
  • Students who, through their experiences in college, feel empowered to study abroad, go on an internship, or take that first job away from the comfort of their hometown.

The stories featured in this series will highlight the success of a variety of students who know that learning happens far beyond the classroom and that those experiences have led to their accomplishments, both big and small.
