The UTEP strategic planning process is underway, and the Strategic Planning Advisory Committee has made great progress in this initial stage. As the process continues, we will provide regular updates to the campus community.
We are in the discovery stage of the strategic planning process. The Advisory Committee began by exploring the emergent challenges that confront higher education. A condensed list of papers that have informed our thinking about the future challenges are listed on the Strategic Plan website under Resources.
The alternative futures approach is a framework to explore ways in which we can move forward by building on UTEP’s unique advantages. With this in mind, the Strategic Planning Advisory Committee is examining a list of proven campus initiatives from every college and school that are well positioned to address emergent higher education challenges and have the potential to be scaled up and applied to the entire University. At this time, the Advisory Committee is beginning to think more deeply about the impact these scaled-up initiatives could have on key outcomes such as enrollment, student success, research and scholarship, community impact, and institutional resources.
Our next step is to develop scenarios to assess the impact of scaling up these initiatives to the University level. Based on these assessments, the Advisory Committee will identify a smaller number of initiatives with potential. These initiatives will then be shared with internal and external stakeholders on campus and in the community for feedback beginning in early April. This feedback will be crucial in further exploring the proposed initiatives and their viability.
